HIGHLANDERS PLATE 18 RUNS IN WIN OVER RIDER

GAME INFORMATION
Score: Radford 18, Rider 0
Records: Highlanders (6-11) | Broncs (6-8)
Location: Radford, Va. (Radford Baseball Stadium)

RADFORD, Va. – Led by Jonathan Gonzalez, with a career-high four RBIs, the Radford baseball team scored 18 runs on 16 hits and totaled seven extra-base hits in an 18-0 victory against Rider on Friday afternoon in the series opener at Radford Baseball Stadium.

Gonzalez went 3-for-4, scored two runs, drove in four and was a triple shy of hitting for the cycle. His two runs and three hits tied a career-high for him and he surpassed his previous career-high three RBIs, which he tallied on March 22, 2016 against Virginia Tech.

The Highlanders (6-11) not only had a great day offensively, Zack Ridgely (2-3) had a great day on the mound as he only allowed three hits in seven innings of work and struck out five earning the win. Ridgely retired 15 straight after he gave up his first hit of the game in the second inning. Freshman Evan Treehouse closed the door on the Broncs (6-8) pitching a career-high two innings and striking out three.

Radford had 18 hits, as 10 different players had a hit in the game. Gonzalez picked up his first two RBIs as he plated Adam Whitacre and Kyle Butler in the first inning, which gave the Highlanders a 2-0 lead. Butler extended it to a 5-0 lead with his first home run of the season in the second inning.

Anthony Miano's single to left field in the third inning scored Gonzalez and Luke Wise dropped a beautiful drag bunt towards first base with two outs that scored Spencer Horwitz, which put the game at 7-0. Another run scored in the inning on a throwing error by the Rider first baseman.

In the fourth inning, Gonzalez hit a two-run no-doubter to left center that gave the Highlanders double digits on the scoreboard with a 10-0 lead. Radford scored a combined eight runs in the sixth and seventh innings. Matt Roth hit a two-out solo shot to left center field and Chandler Davis doubled to left field and scored Miano and Horwitz, which gave the Highlanders a 13-0 lead.

Clayton Baine picked up his third hit of the season and his first collegiate home run, a three-run shot to left field, that made it a 16-0 game in the seventh inning. Roth recorded his second RBI of the day with a single through the left side and scored the final run of the game on a Cody Schneider single through the left side.

Win: Zack Ridgely (2-3)
Loss: Pete Soporowski (1-2)

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

•  It is the second time this season Radford has shutout an opponent, but the first time it has been done at the Radford Baseball Stadium since April 29 of last season when the Highlanders defeated Gardner-Webb, 1-0.
•  Jonathan Gonzalez picked up three hits and plated four runs, the most of any Highlander on the day.
•  Four players had two hits – Matt Roth, Kyle Butler, Anthony Miano and Chandler Davis – and combined for eight RBIs.
•  Kyle Butler tallied three RBIs, but scored a team-high four times. Roth, Gonzalez and Miano each scored twice.

QUOTABLE
"I'm really proud of the way we have played the last few games. We are learning to compete for all nine innings. I thought Ridgley attacked the zone and we pretty much played really good defense. A bunch of guys up and down order had some outstanding at bats. However, tomorrow is a new game that starts 0-0." ~ Radford head coach, Joe Raccuia.

UP NEXT
Radford looks to go for its second series win of the season and fourth win in a row in game two of the three-game series against Rider. Danny Hrbek (1-1) will face off against Nick Margevisius (2-0) on the mound.
