HIGHLANDERS SWEPT ON THE ROAD AT ETSU

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The Radford softball team returned to action Friday, but fell in a doubleheader at East Tennessee State on Friday, losing a 4-3 decision in the opener and a 10-2 six-inning game in the nightcap.

Kayla Bishton had a strong day in a losing effort for the Highlanders, going 4 for 6 (2 for 3 in each game) with a home run, two doubles and two RBIs, and Marissa Gagliano added three hits and two runs scored. However, ETSU totaled 21 hits, jumped out to early leads in each game and never trailed.

The Buccaneers took a 3-0 edge in the first game with a run in the first and two more in the second as two infield hits set the table in each frame and two-out hits plated the runs, including a two-run double by Danielle Knoetze.

Radford came back to tie it with three runs in the top of the third. Callie Morgan started it off with a double over the left-fielder and scored on Marissa Gagliano's RBI single past the shortstop into center. Gagliano took second on the throw home, moved to third on a groundout and came home on a sacrifice fly by Brittany Wratchford. Bishton then followed with a solo homer over the fence in center, her second of the season.

Kayla Huffman came on in relief of Abby Morrow in the third and worked out of a jam, but the Buccaneers scored the eventual game-winning run in the fourth on a pair of doubles, with Knoetze getting her ninth of the season to drive in the run.

Mallory Marsicek relieved Huffman in the sixth after a walk and hit batter started the frame. She induced a pair of groundballs to Gagliano at short, including one for a double play, to keep it a one-run game.

The Highlanders then had a chance to tie it in the seventh after Morgan was hit by a pitch, went to second on a sacrifice by Gagliano and advanced to third on a groundout. Brittany Wratchford then fouled one off deep to left and worked a 3-2 count before a popout to the first baseman ended it.

Huffman suffered the loss, allowing the run on three hits with four strikeouts and four walks. Four of the six hits allowed by Morrow didn't leave the infield. She struck out one and walked one.

Radford totaled five hits against ETSU starter Madison Ogle, but none after the fourth inning.

ETSU jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning of the second game as it continued doing damage with two outs. After a leadoff single, another infield hit and a walk loaded the bases, Marsicek fielded a grounder back to her and got the force at home for the second out, but Quinn Giesick followed with a three-run double to the fence in center, her third hit of the day.

The Buccaneers then added four more runs on three hits and two walks in the second inning off of Marsicek and Tiffany Brown, as Knoetze capped it with a two-run homer.

Radford got on the board in the top of the third on RBI hits by Bishton and Hunter Mundy. It started with infield singles by Lauren Maddrey and Gagliano, before Bishton hit her second double of the game down the left-field line and Mundy hit a two-out single to left. Gagliano was 2 for 3 in the game.

ETSU, though, scored two in the fourth on a walk and two doubles, before ending the game in the sixth on another double. Marsicek (1-2) took the loss. Lauren Maddrey made her collegiate pitching debut and worked one scoreless inning before allowing the run in the sixth.

Radford will return to action at home on Sunday as a doubleheader against St. John's has been added to the schedule. First pitch of the opening game is scheduled for 1 p.m.

St. John's had an opening in its schedule after its home tournament was wiped out by the winter storm earlier this week. The Red Storm (11-8) defeated ETSU twice this season and split two against Morehead State. They also own a victory over PAC 12 member Oregon State. St. John's owns a 3-2 all-time lead against Radford and won the last meeting 6-2 in 2013.

The Highlanders will also host their postponed doubleheader against NC Central on Tuesday, beginning at 5 p.m.
