BOONE, N.C. – Radford's five-game winning streak came to an end Tuesday night as the Highlanders dropped a 13-9 contest to Appalachian State despite four players collecting multi-hits in the first meeting between the two teams in six years.

Jonathan Gonzalez, Kyle Butler and Adam Whitacre finished with three hits each, combining for seven RBIs. Gonzalez led the way with three RBIs, while Butler and Whitacre had two each.

Trailing 2-0 after the first two innings, the Highlanders tallied seven runs between the third and fourth innings on six hits.

Straton Podaras led the third inning off with a six-pitch walk, advancing on a Luke Wise sacrifice bunt. Adam Whitacre followed with a single through the right side to score Podaras for Radford's first run.

Swinging the hottest bat in the lineup, Kyle Butler doubled a 3-2 pitch down the left field line, scoring Whitacre all the way from first base. Following a Danny Hrbek strikeout, Gonzalez drove a 0-2 changeup off the right-center field scoreboard to hand the Highlanders a 4-2 lead.

Appalachian State got one run back in the bottom half of the inning on a Jason Curtis solo home run to left field off Radford starter Andrew Nardi.

Evan Threehouse came on in relief of Nardi in the third, tossing two extremely efficient innings for the Highlanders. Threehouse allowed only one hit in two innings of relief.

Radford got the run back in the fourth as Richard De la Cruz led another inning off with a walk, swiping second and advancing to third via Wise sac bunt. Whitacre walked on four straight balls after a first pitch strike.

With runners on the corners and two outs, Butler put down a squeeze bunt. Butler beat the throw to first as De la Cruz trotted home, a wild throw by the Mountaineer pitcher allowed Whitacre to score from first base. Knocked down by a collision at first, Butler was unable to advance.

Hrbek and Gonzalez followed with back-to-back singles up the middle as Butler scored on Gonzalez's second hit of the contest. The three-run inning extended Radford's lead to 7-3.

Appalachian State fought back with a five-run fifth inning on four hits and one Radford error. Chandler Seagle had a two-run double in the inning, while Tyler Stroup doubled and Drake Zupic singled in runs to give the Mountaineers an 8-7 lead.

The Mountaineer lead was short lived as Whitacre launched a 2-2 pitch over the right field fence. Butler followed with another double, this time down the right field line. A deep fly out to center field allowed Butler to advance to third, later scoring on a wild pitch to give Radford a 9-8 lead.

The bottom half of the sixth saw Appalachian State put runners on second and third with one out. Colin Reid came out of the Radford bullpen to punch out two Mountaineers swinging to get the Highlanders out of the jam.

Radford was unable to hold on to its lead as Appalachian State scored five unanswered runs, highlighted by a two-run home run off the bat of Matt Vernon and a two-run inside the park home run by Tyler Stroup.
