RADFORD SWEEPS DOUBLEHEADER BEHIND PITCHING, TIMELY HITTING

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford softball team used a balanced team effort to record its first doubleheader sweep of the season Tuesday night, posting 6-1 and 6-0 victories over NC Central.

Abby Morrow and Kayla Huffman each recorded four-hit performances in the circle, while also making some history. In the opener, Morrow notched her 40th career victory to move into fifth place alone on the program's list, while upping her career strikeout total to 314, fourth-most for a Highlander pitcher.

Huffman followed by notching her second straight shutout while recording a career-high 15 strikeout, just one shy of the program record of 16 set by Ashley Taylor, the school's all-time leader in wins and strikeouts, in 2007.

Offensively, a trio of two-out, two-run hits accounted for the six Radford runs in the first game and solo home runs by Kayla Bishton, Hunter Mundy and Summer Robinson highlighted the nightcap.

Maggie Rowe went 3 for 3 in the opener and her two-run double off the fence in left gave the Highlanders a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Bishton and Mundy scored on the play after drawing a walk and singling, respectively.

Radford (12-11) then pulled away with two runs each in the fifth and sixth innings. After an infield single by Lauren Maddrey, a hit batter and a sacrifice by Marissa Gagliano, Mundy singled back up the middle to make it 4-0. In the sixth, Rowe led off with a single, Sofia Tapia followed with a double and Callie Morgan dropped a blooper down the right field line for her first career RBIs.

Morrow, meanwhile, allowed just two hits through six scoreless innings before a solo homer in the seventh provided the lone NC Central run. She struck out six, walked none and was helped by two double plays.

Huffman followed up on her strong performance on Sunday by striking out 12 Eagles through the first five innings, including three each in the first, third and fifth frames. She also had two in both the fourth and sixth innings before struggling with control in the seventh. After walking the bases loaded, she followed a forceout at home with her 15th strikeout before a grounder to Mundy at third for another forceout to secure the shutout.

The offense provided the only needed runs with more two-out damage in the second inning. After the first two batters were retired, Tapia reached on a swinging bunt and Robinson doubled down the left field to put runners on second and third. Maddrey then sent a slow roller to short that left the Eagles with no play for an RBI hit and Robinson came home a wild pitch to make it 2-0.

The Highlanders added two more in the third as Bishton led off with a homer to right-center, her third of the year, and a walk, single and two fielder's choices plated the other.

Mundy and Robinson capped the scoring in the fifth and sixth with their blasts, giving them four and three on the season, respectively, and Radford a total of eight over its last four games.

Mundy combined for three hits and three RBIs on the day, while Robinson was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and two runs scored in the nightcap.

The Highlanders will now prepare for their Big South Conference-opening series at Commonwealth rival Liberty this weekend, beginning with a single game on Friday at 7 p.m.
