WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Radford was held to one run on two hits in an 9-1 loss to Kent State in the opening game of the Wake Forest Tournament, Friday afternoon at Couch Ballpark.

Kent State struck first in the top of the third, scoring runs on a Mason Mamarella triple and Luke Burch ground out. The Highlanders were held without a base runner for the first 2.2 innings pitched by Kent State starter Connor Wollershiem, allowing a hit by pitch in the bottom half of the inning.

Following Zack Ridgely's first three up, three down inning; Radford put two runners on as Danny Hrbek was hit by a pitch and Jonathan Gonzalez walked with one out. Following Gonzalez getting picked off at first, Matt Roth walked to put runners on first and second.

Spencer Horwitz followed with a single through the right side as Hrbek raced around the bases. A strong one hop throw from Burch in right field got a head first sliding Hrbek at home.

The bottom of the fifth saw Radford load the bases with one out on three consecutive walks. Kyle Butler placed a perfectly executed bunt down the third base line, scoring Chandler Davis from third base. Pulling within 2-1 with only one out in the inning, Radford was unable to take the lead after back-to-back strikeouts from Hrbek and Gonzalez.

Kent State blew the game wide open in the top of the sixth, plating four runs on three hits. The Golden Flashes scored on a bases loaded walk, sacrifice fly, wild pitch and triple in the inning.

After taking a 6-1 lead, Austin Havekost came out of the Golden Flash bullpen to limit the Highlanders to two base runners in the final four frames. Kent State added a run in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings for the 9-1 victory.
