RADFORD LACROSSE FALLS SHORT IN COMEBACK AGAINST MERCER

GAME INFORMATION
Score: Mercer 18, Radford 12
Records: Bears (4-1) | Highlanders (3-3)
Location: Macon, Ga. (Five Star Stadium)

MACON, Ga. – The Radford women's lacrosse team's comeback fell short as they dropped an 18-12 contest to Mercer at Five Star Stadium on Thursday afternoon.

The Highlanders (3-3) went on a 4-0 run over a 2:33 span in the second half and got as close as five goals from tying the game, until Mercer (4-1) ended the game scoring five of the final nine goals.

Mercer opened the game with two early goals from Kate Leone and Erica Coyne, but Adrian Rius cut the deficit to one goal as Lindsey Carroll found her for the score with 24:03 left in the first half. The Bears scored three of the next four, but Radford made it a 5-4 game with back-to-back goals from Emily Kowalik and Callie Bonnel.

With 10:57 left in the first half, Mercer began an 8-0 run that carried over into the second half, which made it a 13-4 game until Kowalik, Ruland, Rius and Bonnel all scored unassisted goals forcing the Bears to call a timeout with 19:11 remaining in the game.

Radford was outscored by Mercer 5-4 in the final 15:27 of the game and clinched the 18-12 victory for Mercer. However, the Highlanders held the top scoring team in the nation to their lowest goals scored with a win all season.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
•  Juliette Ruland and Callie Bonnel scored seven of Radford's 12 goals. Ruland led the team with four, while Bonnel added three.
•  Adrian Rius, Emily Kowalik tacked on two goals each, while Emma Rogers scored one.
•  Reigning Big South Freshman of the Week, Lindsey Carroll, set up her teammates for scores contributing with two assists.
•  Shea Swingle gathered six ground balls and caused two turnovers on the defensive end.
•  Bonnel had a team-high three caused turnovers and added two ground ball pick-ups.
•  Rius added to her draw control total with five against the Bears. She now has 34 draw controls this season, which is half the total amount she had in 2016.
•  Jenny Davis (2-1) suffered the loss as she picked up four saves in the loss. Maddie Mashewske played for 21:53 and picked up two saves.
•  The Highlanders recorded 15 draw controls and had 17 of their 21 shots land on goal.

QUOTABLE
"The toughest loses are when you beat yourself and unfortunately that's what happened today.  We dug ourselves too big of a hole in the first half that we couldn't quite dig out of in the second half.  Once we clean up our ground balls and the turnovers we will be back to having a winning record. Win or lose, Adrian Rius continues to dominate on the draw and Juliette Ruland was really finding the back of the net for the first time this season, I'm proud of them both." ~ Radford head coach, Haley Marvine.
