RADFORD DROPS 4-1 DECISION AT PRESBYTERIAN

GAME INFORMATION
  • Score: Presbyterian 4, Radford 1
  • Records: Blue Hose (14-15, 3-2) | Highlanders (11-15, 2-3)
  • Location: PC Baseball Complex | Clinton, S.C.

CLINTON, S.C. – Radford dropped the second game of its three-game series at Presbyterian 4-1 as the Blue Hose received a complete game 12-strikeout performance from Tanner Chock, Saturday afternoon at the PC Baseball Complex.

In what started off as a pitchers' duel between Radford's Danny Hrbek and Chock, both pitchers held one another scoreless for the first four innings. Radford and Presbyterian only managed one hit apiece in the four frames.

Radford struck first in the top of the fifth as Richard De la Cruz kept the inning alive with a four-pitch two-out walk. The freshman then proceeded to steal second base, advancing to third on a wild throw by the Presbyterian catcher.

Clayton Baine came through with a double to left field, plating De la Cruz easily. Looking to add to the lead, Luke Wise ripped a line drive up the middle only to be snagged by a diving Cletis Avery.

Hrbek kept the lead in tact as he stranded a runner on second base in the bottom half of the inning, getting Nick Guimbarda to strikeout looking on a seven-pitch at bat.

Radford loaded the bases in the sixth on singles by Kyle Butler, Jonathan Gonzalez and Spencer Horwitz. The Highlanders were unable to capitalize as Matt Roth hit a chopper to short forcing a fielders' choice putout at second base to end the threat.

Already making his presence known on defense, Avery handed the Blue Hose the lead on a two-run home run to left-center field. Presbyterian padded its lead with a two-run double by Glen Casaceli in the bottom of the seventh to extend the Blue Hose lead to 4-1.

Chock limited the Highlanders to one base runner over the final three frames, striking out six of his career-high 12 strikeouts in the process.

QUOTABLE
  • "[Tanner] Chock threw really well today. He had fastball command to both sides of the plate and had a plus breaking ball when he needed it. I like the way we pitched and defended in the field, but our lack of discipline cost us a bunch of at bats." ~ Radford head coach Joe Raccuia

ON DECK
  • Radford will look to avoid being swept for the second time in 2017 on Sunday.
  • First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
  • The Highlander's probable will be determined later as Presbyterian will send LHP Hayden Deal (2-2, 4.94) to the bump.
