RADFORD, Va. – Unable to continue its winning streak, Radford dropped the season series to Appalachian State, falling short 7-5 as the Highlanders made a late ninth inning comeback in the final Tuesday home game of the season.

Heading into the bottom of the ninth, trailing 7-3, Radford loaded the bases with two outs. Adam Whitacre reached on a fielding error to start the inning and Kyle Butler followed with a one-out bloop single to center. Danny Hrbek walked to load the bases with one out.

Entering the game as Radford's RBI leader, Jonathan Gonzalez was unable to plate any runs as the senior struck out swinging. Down to its last out, Matt Roth hit a ground ball up the middle as Mountaineer second baseman Avery Jackson made a backhanded play as he ranged to his right.

Jackson quickly made a charge to second in an attempt to tag the base to force out Butler, but instead change his mind last minute, throwing to first base in an attempt to gun down a racing Roth. The throw was wide and not in time as Whitacre scored easily, Butler was able to score from second on the errant throw to pull Radford within two runs.

Spencer Horwitz came up with runners on the corners and two outs, but the two-out rally ended with a ground out to second base.

At one point in the game, Radford led 3-2, scoring two runs in the second inning on a Luke Wise single through the right side and a steal attempt in the third. The third saw Richard De la Cruz break for second base as Horwitz scored from third on the throw to second.

Appalachian State took the lead, scoring five straight runs in the fourth and fifth innings. The fourth saw Jackson lead off the inning with solo home run and Matt Vernon connected on a two-run blast later in the frame. Conner Leonard provided the third Mountaineer home run in the fifth on a two-run shot to push the lead to 7-3.
