RADFORD CLAIMS SERIES WIN WITH 5-4 VICTORY

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – For the second time this weekend, all's well that ended well for the Radford softball team as it built a sizeable lead before holding off a Gardner-Webb seventh-inning rally to claim a 5-4 victory and take the Big South Conference series.

Maggie Rowe hit a two-run homer, while Kayla Bishton, Hunter Mundy and Sofia Tapia contributed one RBI apiece as the Highlanders improved to 17-14 overall and 3-3 in the conference. Bishton and Hannah Medlam each had two of the team's eight hits.

Abby Morrow (13-7) had a shutout through six innings for the second straight start before again running into trouble in the seventh. This time, Kayla Huffman came on to get the final two outs and notch her first save.

Radford struck in the top of the first as Mundy kept the inning alive with a two-out walk and Rowe put a 3-2 pitch over the left-field fence for two-run homer, her fourth of the season. Mundy extended her reached-base streak to 14 games.

Morrow walked the Gardner-Webb leadoff batter in the bottom of the frame, but stranded the runner at third after three groundball outs. She retired 11 straight batters overall before the Runnin' Bulldogs got a two-out single in the fourth for their first hit of the game.

The Highlanders made it 4-0 in the fifth, getting a pair of two-out hits that provided runs. Medlam led off with a single for the first hit against reliever Mackenzie Thompson and moved to second on a grounder for the second out. Bishton then delivered an RBI single to center and went to second on the throw home. Mundy followed with an infield single to deep short. The diving Gardner-Webb infielder made a backhand stop, but the ball squirted into left field, allowing Bishton to come home.

Radford added what proved to be the game-winning run in the sixth as Summer Robinson walked, advanced to second a wild pitch and scored on an RBI single to center by Tapia.

Gardner-Webb threatened in the sixth, putting two on with one out, but Morrow got out of it with a pair of groundballs. She got another one to start the seventh for the first out and Mundy's sixth assist, but the Runnin' Bulldogs followed with four straight hits on two singles and two doubles to cut the deficit to 5-3. That brought Huffman in, but an RBI single made it a one-run game. After a popout to second, a walk put runners on first and second, before Huffman struck out Callie Thornton swinging to end it.

After holding Gardner-Webb to three hits in the first six innings, Morrow finished with seven allowed for the game, with three strikeouts and two walks.

Radford returns to action on Wednesday, traveling to East Carolina for a non-conference doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
