MORROW’S GEM IN 1-0 WIN GIVES RADFORD SERIES VICTORY

CLINTON, S.C. – After the Radford softball team dropped a 4-3 decision to Presbyterian in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, Abby Morrow came up huge in the nightcap, tossing a four-hit shutout in a 1-0 victory to give the Highlanders a key Big South series win.

The Highlanders took two of the three one-run games in their last conference road series to improve to 25-21 overall and 6-9 in the league.

Marissa Gagliano and Hannah Medlam each had three hits on the day and combined for the lone run in the win with two-out hits in the fifth inning. Gagliano, who had tripled earlier in the game, poked a single through the right side and stole second before Medlam put one over the left-fielder for the RBI double.

Morrow (18-10) made it stand up with a perfect bottom of the inning, three strikeouts in the sixth and three groundball outs in the seventh. She struck out six without a walk for the second straight game and moved into fourth alone in program history with 49 career victories. It was also her fifth shutout of the season and 11th overall, tying Jackie Jenkins for third-most by a Highlander.

Of the four hits by the Blue Hose, two were infield singles and another was a blooper. The other was a solid single to left with one-out in the seventh, but Morrow induced a force at second and got a grounder to third to end it. The Highlander defense was solid behind her, including an inning-ending double play in the fourth.

Radford totaled nine hits in the game, including two each by Gagliano, Medlam and Sofia Tapia, but left nine runners on base, including six in scoring position.

Game 1
Gagliano scored the first Highlander run and Medlam drove in the other two, but they were unable to overcome a four-run bottom of the first by Presbyterian.

The Highlanders took a 1-0 lead Marissa Gagliano led off with a double, went to third on a sacrifice by Medlam and scored on an infield hit to deep short by Hunter Mundy.

However, PC used three hits and two walks to do all its damage for the game against Kayla Huffman. A two-out, two-run single capped the scoring and provided the eventual game-deciding runs.

After Huffman worked out of a jam in the third, Radford cut the deficit to 4-3 in the fifth on Medlam's two-out, two-run double by Medlam. Brittany Wratchford led off with a single and Tapia added a one-out bunt single. Two batters later, Medlam fouled off three 0-2 pitches before flying one into left-center and the ball went off the glove of the diving leftfielder.

The Highlanders had another chance in the sixth as Kayla Bishton led off with a single and Summer Robinson followed with a bunt single. A sacrifice by Wratchford moved both runners into scoring position, but a popout into shallow right and groundout ended the threat.

Morrow came on in relief with a runner on second in the bottom of the sixth to keep it a one-run deficit, but PC starter Alex Cook got three straight outs in the seventh, including a second hard lineout to third off the bat of Gagliano.

Radford totaled seven hits off of Cook, while Huffman allowed a total of five in taking the loss. She had four strikeouts and four walks. It was just the team's second loss in 20 games this season in which it outhit the opponent.

The Highlanders play their final non-conference and last road game of the regular season on Wednesday, making the short trip to Blacksburg for a rematch against Virginia Tech. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
