SOFTBALL UNABLE TO AVOID SWEEP BY LONGWOOD

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford softball team was able to break through on the scoreboard in Saturday's doubleheader finale, but it wasn't enough to provide a victory as Longwood closed out a three-game sweep with a 5-2 decision. The Lancers won the day's opener 5-0.

Lindsay Toneygay posted her first career multi-hit game, going 2 for 2 with a double and an RBI. Callie Morgan added an RBI for the Highlanders (25-25, 6-12).

Game 1
Sydney Gay tossed the second straight shutout in the three-game series for Longwood, allowing just three hits. The Lancers got single runs in the third and fifth innings before adding three in the seventh.

Justina Augustine provided the decisive run with a leadoff homer in the third and a two-out single by Jordan Clark made it 2-0. Two singles and two walks combined for the final three runs.

Abby Morrow started the game, pitched into the third inning and allowed four hits before Kayla Huffman relieved and went the rest of the way, giving up five hits.

Morgan had a double and Brooke Trappuzano and Hunter Mundy each singled for Radford's three hits.

Game 2
Longwood again grabbed a 1-0 lead in the third inning on another two-out hit, before the Radford tied it up in the fourth. Mundy drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a sacrifice and advanced to third on a groundout. Toneygay followed a two-out single to center to end a 26-inning scoreless drought for the Highlanders.

However, the Lancers regained the lead for good on a two-out grand slam by Augustine. Two singles around an infield hit loaded the bases with one out before Morrow induced a dribbler for a force out at the plate, but Augustine worked a 3-2 count and hit one over the fence in left-center.

In the seventh, Toneygay doubled to right center and scored on Morgan's RBI single to left. Marissa Gagliano had the other of Radford's four hits in the game.

Elizabeth McCarthy pitched the first five innings and allowed the one run on one hit to earn the win. Morrow worked six innings, allowing five runs on eight hits with three strikeouts and two walks.

Longwood (24-26, 13-8) won eight of its last nine games to finish its regular season, clinched at least third place in the conference and remained unbeaten against RU in conference play.

Radford will conclude the regular season next weekend, hosting a three-game series against Winthrop, as it looks to earn one of the six spots in the Big South Tournament. The Highlanders will celebrate Senior Day before a 6 p.m. on Saturday and then play a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
