RADFORD SPLITS FIRST TWO CONFERENCE HOME GAMES

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford softball team posted a 5-1 victory in its Big South Conference home opener Saturday, before Charleston Southern pulled away to a 10-2 six-inning win in the second game of the doubleheader.

Kayla Huffman pitched a three-hitter with seven strikeouts for the Highlander victory. Kayla Bishton hit a two-run home run, Brittany Wratchford added a solo shot, Hunter Mundy had two hits and an RBI and Summer Robinson also drove in a run in the game. Mundy also had a hit in the nightcap, extending her reached base streak to 17 straight games.

The second game was 3-2 before Charleston Southern (19-27, 4-7) scored two runs in the fifth and five more in the sixth. The loss was just the second in nine home games for Radford (18-16, 4-4).

Game 1
Mundy had two of the Radford's six hits, while Bishton scored three of the team's five runs. The two combined to give the Highlanders a 1-0 lead in the first inning Bishton walked and Mundy smacked the next pitch off the centerfield fence for an RBI double.

Radford added another run in the third on a two-out RBI single by Robinson. Bishton again helped set the table with a one-out walk and moved to second on a sharp single to left by Mundy. Two batters later, Robinson lined one back up the middle off the glove of pitcher Cheyenne Gandara and into centerfield.

Bishton's two-run homer in the fifth made it 4-0. After Marissa Gagliano poked a leadoff single into right-center, Bishton sliced one to left-center and it carried over the fence for her fourth of the season.

Charleston Southern tallied its lone run against Huffman in the sixth inning on doubles by Jade Gandara and Caitlyn Emberson. However, Wratchford answered in the bottom of the inning, leading off with a blast to left for her eighth of the season.

Huffman was unhittable early, striking out the side in the first and adding two more in the second after starting the inning with a walk and a hit batter. She also pitched around the Buccaneers getting the first two on in the third after a walk and a bunt single, getting help from the defense. With runners on second and third and one out, Gagliano fielded a grounder and came home to cut down the runner trying to score. Maggie Rowe then threw out Amanda Matsumoto, the conference's leading base-stealer, trying to swipe third, ending the inning.

Huffman (4-4) then worked perfect fourth and seventh innings to close out another strong performance. She had just the two walks and has allowed one run or fewer in five of her last six starts.

Game 2
Radford struck for a run in the bottom of the first again as Gagliano led off with a double to right-center, stole third and scored on an RBI double to left-center by Mundy.

However, Charleston Southern took its first lead of the day in the third inning a walk, bunt single, groundout and two-run single by Jade Gandara. The Buccaneers made it 3-1 in the fourth with another leadoff walk, a double and a sacrifice fly.

Maggie Rowe quickly cut the deficit to one by hitting the first pitch of the bottom of the inning off the scoreboard in left-center for her fifth home run of the season.

CSU, though, came back in the top of the fifth on another single by Jade Gandara and a two-run homer by Caitlyn Emberson for a 5-2 score.

Lauren Maddrey then came on in relief of Abby Morrow and got the first two batters in the sixth, but the Buccaneers followed with three hits around a walk, capped by a three-run homer by Emberson.

CSU totaled 11 hits in the game, while Arizona Pilgrim limited the Highlanders to just four hits. Morrow (13-9) allowed five earned run on seven hits with a strikeout and three walks.

The teams will play the rubber game of the series Sunday at 1 p.m.
