RADFORD, Va. – Playing in its fourth Big South doubleheader on the season, Radford split the day with High Point as both teams combined for eight runs each on 29 hits. Kyle Butler led the Highlanders with a 4 for 9 performance with three runs scored and two RBIs, while Austin Gerber allowed only one hit in 4.2 innings of relief in two appearances on the day.

GAME ONE

Radford tallied five runs on seven hits in the first two innings, but was held hitless for the final seven innings in the lid-lifter.

Kyle Butler and Danny Hrbek opened the game with a pair of one-out singles, while Jonathan Gonzalez followed with a RBI single through the right side for his 39th on the season. The Highlanders were unable to tally anymore runs as Spencer Horwitz flied out and Matt Roth grounded out the end the threat.

Radford added four more runs in the second on a two-out rally. Anthony Miano put a Highlander on base with an opposite field double down the right field line. Following an Adam Whitacre walk, Butler singled to right field to plate Miano for the second run of the game. Hrbek followed with another RBI single to right field.

Gonzalez walked to load the bases for Horwitz. The freshman ripped a first pitch single up the middle, scoring Butler and Hrbek as the Highlanders controlled an early 5-0 lead.

Radford starter Zack Ridgely held the Panthers hitless until a Blake Schunk double in the fourth inning, putting two runners on base as Austen Zente led off the inning with a hit by pitch. Josh Greene put the Panthers on the board with a RBI single to left-center on a 3-2 pitch.

Carson Jackson loudly inched the Panthers within one run as he launched a first pitch fastball over the left field wall as the three-run home run made the score 5-4.

The Panthers tied the game in the sixth on a Greene sacrifice fly as High Point led off the inning with a pair of singles. Radford attempted to answer in the bottom half of the inning as Luke Wise reached base on a fielding error, stealing second and third base, but was left stranded.

High Point starter Andrew Gottfried combined with reliever Jeremy Johnson to only allow two base runners in the final six frames. Johnson came out of the bullpen to toss three perfect innings, striking out four, retiring all nine batters he faced.

Radford's bullpen kept the Panthers quiet until the ninth inning as Jackson reached on a Butler throwing error to start the ninth. He moved over on a sac bunt, scoring on a Jordan Sergent single up the middle for the 6-5 victory.

Win: Jeremy Johnson (3-2) (3.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 K)
Loss: Austin Gerber (4-2) (1.2 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K)

GAME TWO

The second game of the doubleheader saw five runs on 10 hits in the first three innings as the final six frames only had three combined hits.

Radford's pitching staff combined to hold High Point to one hit over the final six innings as the Highlanders evened the series with a 3-2 victory.

For the second time on the day, Radford struck first as Whitacre led off the game with a walk, later stealing second base to set up an RBI opportunity for Butler. In a seven-pitch at bat, Butler singled down the right field line for the first run of the game.

High Point answered in the second as Jackson and Hunter Lee reached on a pair of singles. Sergent grounded into what looked to be a double play as Butler flipped on to shortstop Clayton Baine at second base, but Baine's throw to first skipped away from Horwitz. The errant throw allowed Jackson to score from second to knot the game at one.

Baine made up for the errant throw with a double down the left field line to start the bottom half of the inning, advancing later to third on a wild pitch. Looking to take the lead, Wise was given the squeeze bunt sign, but his attempt bounced back to pitcher. High Point's starter Drew Daczkowski flipped on to catcher JJ Woodard, putting tag out Baine.

High Point took a 2-1 lead as Zente led off the third with a first pitch home run to right field.

The Highlanders quickly answered back as Whitacre reached on a dropped fly ball in right field to start the inning, moving to third on a Butler single.

Runners on the corners for Hrbek, the senior nearly missed a three-run home run as he doubled off the top of the wall to score Whitacre. Hrbek's 200th career hit knotted the game at two.

Following a Gonzalez walk to load the bases, Horwitz singled through the right side to plate Butler for what turned out to be the game-winning hit. Radford was unable to plate more runs as they followed the RBI single with two swinging strikeouts and a fielders' choice ground out.

Hrbek was also able to pick up his fourth win on the mound as Gerber teamed up with closer Kyle Zurak to throw four innings of one-hit relief baseball.

Gerber yielded only one hit and one walk in three innings, his second appearance on the day. Zurak came on in the ninth to slam the door, striking out two batters in the 3-2 win.

QUOTABLE
  • "Austin [Gerber] came in and did what he's been typically doing for us. That special pitch he has is tough to put good swings on and he's a strike thrower. I guess both teams can be upset that they didn't sweep. We feel fortunate enough to get a split, but I also feel that we should have swept. Both teams should be ready to win the series on Sunday." ~ Radford head coach Joe Raccuia

ON DECK
  • Radford and High Point will play the series finale on Sunday at 2 p.m.
  • RHP Trevor Holloway (3-4, 3.71) vs. RHP Ryan Sande (0-3, 4.15)
