RADFORD PICKS UP WINS OVER MARIST AND LEHIGH TO COMPLETE LEHIGH FALL CLASSIC



BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Radford volleyball team picked up two wins on Saturday over Marist and Lehigh to complete the Lehigh Fall Classic with three overall wins, the most by any team in the field. Valerie Gonzalez and Maddie Palmer combined for 40 kills, while Haley Kleespies totaled 81 assists for the day.
 
MATCH 1 INFORMATION
Score: Radford 3, Marist 1 (20-25, 25-18, 25-14, 25-16)
Records: Highlanders (2-0) | Red Foxes (1-1)
Location: Bethlehem, Pa. (Stabler Arena)
 
Radford (2-0) fell behind early after dropping the first set, 25-20. Marist (1-1) had a .308 attack percentage and 12 kills, while the Highlanders totaled a .118 attack percentage with 11 kills. However, the Highlanders stormed back and had a .647 attack percentage and 14 kills on their way to a 25-18 second set win.
 
Following both teams winning a set each, the third set began with a back and forth score. Later in the set, Radford used a 14-7 run that lifted them to a 22-12 lead and the Highlanders outscored Marist 3-2 in final five points to take a 2-1 set advantage.
 
The fourth set featured nine ties and six lead changes between the two teams. Midway through the set, with the score tied at 12, Radford stormed ahead with a mini 3-0 run making the score 15-12. The streak continued into a 10-4 run, which featured the Highlanders scoring the final five points and sealed the 3-1 set victory.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
•  The Highlanders outscored the Red Foxes 75-48 in the final three sets.
•  Radford had two players with double-digit kills as Maddie Palmer led the way with 15 and Valerie Gonzalez totaled 13.
•  Defensively, the Highlanders totaled 11 team blocks, led by Amaya Rousseau and Maci Keaton with five total blocks – four assisted and one solo for each player.
•  Alyssa Carruth had 12 digs in just her second appearance as a Highlander. Kaylor Nash contributed with seven and Haley Kleespies had six.
•  Kleespies took control of the setter position and recorded 44 assists and six digs. She even contributed with three total blocks.
•  Altogether the team had a .355 attack percentage for the match, including a .647 attack percentage in the second set and a .424 percentage in the third set.
•  Rousseau was lights out with a .615 solo attack percentage, while Keaton followed with a .455 attack percentage. The two players combined for 15 kills.
•  Marist had four service aces, while Radford had seven. Kleespies and Stephanie Neast led the team with two each.
 
MATCH 2 INFORMATION
Score: Radford 3, Lehigh 0 (25-11, 25-19, 25-21)

The Highlanders came out on fire for the start of the Lehigh (1-2) match and took an 8-2 lead that forced a timeout by the tournament host. Following the timeout, Radford outscored the Mountain Hawks 5-3 and took a 13-5 lead. The eight-point lead required Lehigh to use its final timeout of the set.
 
After the final timeout of the set Radford went on a 12-6 run, which gave them the set win, 25-11. Maci Keaton led all players with five total blocks as the team had nine total blocks in the set. The Highlanders had nine kills and committed no attack errors.
 
The second set had five lead changes and four ties early in the set, but midway through with the score 11-10 the Highlanders previewed a mini run and took a 16-13 lead. Radford closed the set with a 9-6 streak en route to taking a two set lead.
 
Both teams battled in the third set, but with Lehigh having a 9-8 lead, a Kaylor Nash service ace sandwiched in between a kill by Valerie Gonzalez and Stephanie Neast gave Radford an 11-9 lead. Later in the set, Radford took advantage of an attack error and took a five point lead, 20-15. The Mountain Hawks outscored the Highlanders 6-5, but Radford was the first to 25 and closed the final set, 25-21.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
•  Maddie Palmer was the first Highlander of the season to record a double-double as she had 12 kills and 15 digs. It is the 36th double-double of her career.
•  Stephanie Neast was one kill shy of a double-double with nine kills and 11 digs.
•  The Highlanders had 11 total blocks and nine of them came in the first set.
•  Maci Keaton had five blocks in the first set, and recorded six altogether. She also contributed with five kills.
•  Alyssa Carruth had 10 digs and led the team with two service aces.
•  Haley Kleespies recorded 37 of the Highlanders 39 assists, added six digs and one block assist.
•  In the first set, Radford had nine kills and a .346 attack percentage, but committed no attack errors.
•  Lehigh had 23 attack errors compared to eight by the Highlanders and only hit .069 percent while Radford had a .305 attack percentage.

UP NEXT
Radford will travel out west to compete in the Wildcat Classic hosted by Arizona. Teams competing in the tournament include: Grand Canyon, Eastern Kentucky and No. 24 Arizona. The Highlanders open play against Grand Canyon on Friday at noon ET.
