ROBERTS SCORES AGAIN; RADFORD FALLS 2-1 AT NO. 5 CLEMSON

MATCH INFORMATION
  • Score: No. 5 Clemson 2, Radford 1
  • Records: Tigers (2-0-0) | Highlanders (1-1-0)
  • Location: Riggs Field | Clemson, S.C.

CLEMSON, S.C. – Radford was unable to overcome two first half goals as a late push in the final minutes fell just short as Kieran Roberts' third goal on the season wiped the clean sheet in the Highlanders 2-1 loss to No. 5 Clemson, Sunday afternoon.

Locked in a physical defensive battle, both teams held one another scoreless for the first 35 minutes as it looked as the first mistake made would result in a goal.

Taking possession off a Radford foul, Tanner Dieterich and Grayson Raynor broke through the Highlander defense. Teamwork by the duo found Diego Campos in the middle of the box, who flicked a shot just above the reach of Nicolas Mertzokat for the first goal of the match in the 36th minute.

Three minutes later, Max Edwards was called for a foul of Gian Scalise inside the box, resulting in a Tigers penalty kick. Campos took the penalty kick, giving the Tigers a 2-0 lead.

Taking five shots in the first half, Radford came out aggressive in the second half as Sivert Daehlie had two shot attempts miss just high, nearly missing the crossbar. The Highlanders received an opportunity in the 51st and 54th minute as Roberts had two good looks on frame, but couldn't shake Ximo Miralles.

The Highlander defense outworked the Tigers for opportunities in the second half and it showed in the 71st as Mertzokat made a diving save on a Robbie Robinson shot attempt, just getting a glove on the shot to the far-left post.

Down to their last 10 minutes, Radford made one final push. Evan Szklennik's shot on frame was secured by Miralles, but Radford regained possession as the Tigers fired a long ball to the Highlanders backline to chew up game clock.

Twenty-nine seconds later, Daehlie sent a ball over the top for Roberts, who beat the Tigers backline in a foot race for the goal from 10-yards out to middle net.

Clemson ran down the clock, ending the Highlanders opportunity for an equalizer, avoiding the comeback to force overtime.

QUOTABLE
  • "I thought the group played hard and stuck to the game plan. My hat goes off to Clemson, who put away their chances at the end of the first half, which good sides do. I feel our group created enough chances in the second half to get level but it just wasn't our night.  Now we have to focus on getting better over the next few days in training and prepare for Davidson." ~ Radford head coach Bryheem Hancock
