ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Radford volleyball team began Big South play on the road at Winthrop on Tuesday night and came out of Rock Hill, S.C., with a four set win.

In a match that featured 32 ties and 15 lead changes, three of the four sets were decided by three points or less. Radford (11-1, 1-0 Big South) fell behind by as many as four points in the first set and was down 11-8 when a Winthrop (8-6, 0-1 Big South) service error cut it to a two-point set. Haley Kleespies picked up two service aces; a Maci Keaton kill and an Eagle attack error gave Radford a 13-11 lead.

The Eagles regained the lead, 19-17, but a 5-0 run gave Radford a 22-20 lead. Winthrop tied the set at 23 when an attack error by Marion Voucher and a Maddie Palmer kill gave Radford the 25-23 first set win.

The second set saw 10 ties and four lead changes. Radford had an 18-16 lead midway through the set when a Sydney Gunter kill was the start of a 9-4 run. The run gave the Eagles a 25-22 victory in the second set.

Radford had its best hitting percentage (.333) in the third set and picked up 13 kills. Four of the 13 kills came with the set tied at 10 and gave the Highlanders a 14-10 lead. Winthrop cut it to as little as three multiple times throughout the set, but four straight points put the Highlanders ahead two sets to one with a 25-19 victory.

The Highlanders took a four-point lead late in the fourth set, which was the largest lead of the set. However, the Eagles came back and tied the set at 21, when Radford scored two straight with two kills. Each team scored two more points with the match-sealing point coming from Mallory McKnight ended the set, 25-23.
