RADFORD HOLDS ON FOR 4-3 VICTORY OVER JAMES MADISON

MATCH INFORMATION
  • Score: Radford 4, James Madison 3
  • Records: Highlanders (4-2-1) | Dukes (3-3-1)
  • Location: Cupp Stadium | Radford, Va.

RADFORD, Va. – After a delayed start time due to lighting in the Radford area, the Highlanders struck early and often, tallying three goals in the first 14 minutes to hold off a late second half charge by in-state foe James Madison 4-3 in the first meeting inside Cupp Stadium in 15 years.

The fast start by the Highlanders saw goals in the 10th minute, 11th minute and 14th minute; scoring the three goals on their first five shots.

Radford's 11th goal in 2017 came from only the fourth different player on the season to score. Standing at the top of the box, Sivert Daehlie hit a striding Michael Walsh on the near side, who found net to far post for his first goal of the season.

Following Walsh's goal in the 10th minute, Kieran Roberts took a through ball down the far side of pitch. His first attempt banged off of TJ Bush, who came out of goal to make a play. The rebound off the save came back to Roberts, firing again for his first goal on the evening inside the 18-yard box.

Three minutes later, Noy Daabul sent a ball over the top as Victor Valls collected the well-played ball and fired a shot on frame. Daehlie regained the rebound, tapping in the ball for an early Radford 3-0 lead.

James Madison took four shots in the first 27 minutes as two shots were blocked by the Highlander defense and two were saved by Nicolas Mertzokat.

The Dukes caught a break in the 28th minute after the Highlanders jumped out to a commanding lead. A James Madison player was fouled inside the box, which resulted in a penalty kick. Niclas Mohr took the kick, beating Mertzokat to the top left shelf.

In the dominating first half, Radford controlled a 11-8 shot advantage as seven attempts came on frame. Identically to the first half, three more goals occurred in a quick turnaround, between the 62nd and 65th minutes.

The Dukes inched within one goal as Manuel Ferriol collected the ball at the top of the 18-yard box, making one dribble and turn for the goal.

Gaining possession off a James Madison foul, Roberts tacked on what turned out to be the most important goal of the match in the 64th minute. From the left side of the box, Roberts ran with the ball, taking a left-footed shot to near post for his second multi-goal match on the year.

One-minute later, Mohr sent a cross into the box as Shaun McKenna headed the corner to Brandon Clegg, whose header inched the Dukes within 4-3 of the Highlanders.

Radford's defense regained composure off the two goals, limiting the Dukes to two shots in the final 25 minutes as Mertzokat came up with two big saves at the Highlanders extended their unbeaten streak to four matches.
