RADFORD, Va. – With less than three minutes remaining in double overtime, freshman forward Amadou Macky Diop found the back of the net with an absolute wonder goal to lift the Radford men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over No. 16 Charlotte at Cupp Stadium on Wednesday night.

With heavy rains in the area finally subsiding, the Highlanders (4-6, 2-2 Big South) looked like the aggressor in overtime. Senior defender Myles Yorke collected a loose ball and fired it over the top of the defense to Max Edwards who laid it off to Diop. The Dakar, Senegal native then showed complete confidence in himself, firing a curling shot from 20 yards out into the top, right corner of the goal.

It was Diop who opened the scoring to begin with in the 47^th minute. Junior midfielder Wyatt Erzen played a perfect through ball down the middle of the pitch to Diop who calmly dribbled around the goalkeeper and tapped in for the goal.

Charlotte (6-3-1, 2-2 C-USA) managed to spoil Radford's hopes of a regulation victory in the 79^th minute. After some physical play right in front of the goal line led to a corner kick, Teddy Chaouche sent a well-timed corner kick into the box where Patrick Hogan was waiting to score a header.

Radford's defense stepped up in overtime, allowing just one shot taken by the 49ers across both extra periods. The Highlanders outshot Charlotte, 20-16, including a 12-8 advantage in shots on goal, over the 107+ minutes played.

DIOP DOMINATION
Wednesday night marked the first time Diop has scored a game-winning goal in his young career. He now leads the Highlanders with six goals and leads the entire Big South in points per game with 1.75 across eight matches. He also ranks second in the conference for goals scored and second for shots per game (3.50).

Radford stays home at Cupp Stadium to take on UNC Asheville this Saturday, Oct. 13 at 4 p.m. Admission is free for all spectators and the game will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
