MEN'S SOCCER FALLS TO NO. 12 HIGH POINT SATURDAY NIGHT


 
HIGH POINT, N.C. – The Radford men's soccer team struck first against No. 12 High Point before ultimately falling, 2-1, at Vert Stadium on Saturday night.
 
The Panthers (12-2-1, 6-0-1 Big South) looked like the stronger side to begin the match, holding the majority of possession in their attacking third. Radford's (6-8, 4-3 Big South) defense never faltered though, denying High Point any real chances to keep the game scoreless.
 
It wasn't until the 35th minute when the Highlanders found their opening and took advantage. After a High Point turnover, senior midfielder Gonzalo Rodriguez spotted freshman forward Amadou Macky Diop and played a long ball in behind the defense. Diop took one touch and fired a low strike into the bottom, left corner of the net to take the lead.
 
The Highlanders continued their strong play following the goal, holding the Panthers without a single shot for the rest of the half.
 
The first 15 minutes of the second half came and went without much of a threat from either side, but the Panthers found their equalizer in the 61st minute. Freshman forward Tony Pineda continued his stellar debut season with a header goal from point-blank range.
 
Just moments later, High Point would take the lead. Making a run into the box, Pineda was taken down and the Panthers were awarded a penalty kick. Junior midfielder Ryan Inman stepped up for his first PK attempt of the season and scored.
 
High Point parked the bus and held the Highlanders without a second-half shot until the 85th minute. Senior forward Kieran Roberts and Gonzalez put back-to-back shots on goal late, but HPU's Keegan Meyer answered each shot with a diving save to see out the win.
 
Freshman goalkeeper Sam Farrell made five saves on 14 shots faced and Radford earned a 5-to-4 lead in corner kicks.

DIOP DOMINATION
Diop has been sensational in his debut season for Radford and Saturday was no different. With his 35th minute goal, the Dakar, Senegal native is now tied for the Big South lead in goals per game (0.66) and ranks second in the conference for goals (8) and points per game (1.59).

UP NEXT
The Highlanders will look to finish strong when they head to Spartanburg, S.C. for the 2018 regular season finale at USC Upstate.
 
The match against the brand new Big South member is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 31 at the County University Soccer Stadium.
