ROBERTS' GOLDEN GOAL GIVES RADFORD DOUBLE OVERTIME VICTORY


 
RADFORD, Va. – With 57 seconds left in double overtime, redshirt senior forward Kieran Roberts slotted home a golden goal to lift Radford to a 1-0 victory over Presbyterian at Cupp Stadium on Saturday night.
 
As the clocked ticked closer and closer towards a scoreless draw, fellow forward Khori Bennett picked out Roberts in the center of the pitch. Roberts held off two defenders on either side of him and fired a low, driven shot past the keeper for his fifth goal of the season.
 
It was a tight battle for the first 109 minutes of the match as neither side could find a breakthrough. At the end of regulation, Presbyterian (2-9, 2-1 BSC) led in shots 13-11, but the Highlanders (3-6, 2-2 BSC) grabbed a 6-3 advantage in shots across the two overtime periods.
 
Roberts led all players with five shots taken while senior midfielder Gonzalo Rodriguez and redshirt senior midfielder Taylor Martin tied with three each. Radford also dominated in corner kicks on the night, 7-2.
 
SQUAD DEPTH
Head Coach Bryheem Hancock is making full use of his team's depth. Junior defender Leon Birke made his first start of the season and redshirt junior defender Benjamin Thiss earned the first start of his career. Now through nine matches, 21 different Highlanders have made at least one start this season.
 
RADFORD'S BRICK WALL
Freshman Sam Farrell has been solid since being named Radford's starting goalkeeper four games ago, but Friday night was his best showing yet. The Severna Park, Md. native was credited with nine saves on 16 shots faced after making seven saves all year entering the match. With his first career shutout, Farrell's goals against average now stands at 1.19.

UP NEXT
The Highlanders stay home to defend Cupp Stadium next Saturday, Oct. 10 when they take on Charlotte at 7 pm. At 5-1-2 this season, the 49ers are ranked No. 18 in the nation according to Top Drawer Soccer and are receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches poll.
 
The game will be free of admission for all spectators and will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
