CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Freshman forward Amadou Macky Diop has been named Big South Attacking Player of the Week after helping the Radford men's soccer team clinch the No. 2 seed in the Big South Tournament with two impressive performances, the league office announced Thursday afternoon.
Diop scored the opening goal on the road at No. 12 High Point last Saturday, latching onto a pass from senior midfielder Gonzalo Rodriguez before taking a single touch and firing a low strike into the bottom corner of the net.
Then, in a match with major postseason implications, Diop played his best game of the season at USC Upstate on Wednesday. The Dakar, Senegal native once again scored the opening goal and then added two assists later in the match.
Even though he missed two games this season, Diop leads the Big South in points (23), points per game (1.77) and goals per game (0.69). He also ranks 2nd in shots per game (3.23), 2nd in goals (9), 4th in assists per game (0.38), 4th in game-winning goals (2), 4th in shots (42) and T-5th in assists (5).
The award is the third of the year for Diop. He was selected for Big South Freshman of the Week on Oct. 1 and Big South Attacking Player of the Week on Oct. 15.
The Highlanders will take on the winner of No. 3 Presbyterian College and No. 6 Longwood in the Big South Semifinals next Wednesday, Nov. 7 at Cupp Stadium. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
