Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

JONES GOES FOR 24 POINTS, 10 ASSISTS IN RADFORD'S WIN AGAINST UIC

RADFORD, Va. – Redshirt sophomore guard Carlik Jones posted his second career double-double to lead the Radford men's basketball team to an 88-78 victory against UIC at the Dedmon Center on Friday night. The contest was the first of four Radford will play in the Gotham Classic.

The game didn't conclude until after 11 p.m., but the late night didn't seem to effect Jones, who set new career highs in points (24) and assists (10). The Cincinnati, Ohio native went 9-of-18 from the floor and 6-of-7 from the free throw line while adding four steals.

Junior guard Donald Hicks went for 16 points on 5-of-6 shooting, including a 4-for-4 clip from 3-point range. Junior guard Travis Fields Jr. contributed 15 points thanks to a 3-for-5 night from beyond the arc in his season debut and senior guard Caleb Tanner also entered double-digit scoring territory with 11 points on 3-of-5 shooting.

Just like in the season opener the Highlanders got off to a quick start and jumped out to a 7-0 lead just three minutes into the game. The Flames battled back and kept the game close, eventually taking an 18-17 lead of their own at the 8:47 mark.

Radford found its rhythm from there, going on a 19-7 run across six minutes to reverse its fortunes and take a 36-25 lead two minutes before halftime. Three straight threes by UIC brought the score to 38-34 heading into the break, giving the visitors plenty of momentum after 20 minutes of action.

The Flames carried their momentum into the second half, knocking down their first four shots to take a 44-41 lead at the 16:25 mark. From that point on, the Highlanders outscored UIC, 47-34 and showed the Radford faithful what this team is made of. The Highlanders went 14-for-26 from the field, 6-for-10 on 3-pointers, 13-for-17 from the charity stripe and forced six turnovers during that stretch to take control of the game.

The lead was pushed to as much as 19 with 1:19 to go and a late UIC shooting spree brought the final score to 88-78.

PLAY OF THE GAME

CAUSING CHAOS
The Highlanders managed to play disciplined basketball while causing chaos for its opponent on Friday night. Radford committed only 13 fouls and turned the ball over only eight times all night compared to 23 fouls and 13 turnovers for UIC.

GETTING TO THE LINE
Radford found a lot of success driving to the basket and drawing fouls against the Flames. The Highlanders finished the night 18-for-26 from the free throw line while limiting UIC to just 11 attempts from the line.

QUOTABLE
"We showed a lot of grit and a lot of toughness tonight. This was a very good basketball team we just played. They came out of halftime really motivated, they gave us some really big haymakers and we took them all. It was great to see the determination of our team in a close game tonight." – Head Coach Mike Jones
