RADFORD EXPLODES FOR 102 POINTS IN WIN OVER GLENVILLE STATE

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford men's basketball team used a balanced attack that saw 12 different players score to race past a high-octane Glenville State squad in a 102-69 victory at the Dedmon Center on Monday night.

With the win, the Highlanders move to 5-1 overall and secure their best start to a season since 1990-91 when they began 8-0. It was the first time Radford scored more than 100 points in a game since defeating Central Penn, 123-63, on Dec. 27, 2015 and it was the first time five or more players finished in double figures since defeating Central Penn the next year on Nov. 16, 2016.

Redshirt sophomore guard Carlik Jones kept up his torrid scoring pace, leading the team with 15 points, six rebounds and two assists. Senior forward Ed Polite Jr. earned his fourth double-double of the year with 12 points and 11 rebounds while junior center Devonnte Holland had his best game of the season with 12 points on 6-of-7 shooting and six rebounds.

Joining them in double figures was freshman guard Cle'von Greene (12), senior guard Caleb Tanner (11) and junior guard Devin Hutchinson (10). As a team, Radford shot 51.9-percent (40-for-77) from the floor and a season-best 86.7-percent (13-for-15) at the free throw line.

The Highlanders struggled to get going at first, beginning the game 0-for-7 from the field until Jones drove the baseline for an up-and-under layup at the 15:26 mark. They even trailed, 9-6 early on, but a 10-0 run regained the lead and made it 16-9 at the midway point of the first half. In fact, after Radford made it 10-9, the team combined to go 9-for-11 to reverse its rough start and go ahead by nine points.

Poor three-point shooting from the Highlanders and hot three-point shooting from the Pioneers let the visitors right back in it though. Glenville State forward Phil Bledsoe drilled three 3-pointers of the final three minutes to pull his team within two near the end of the half before a small scoring spurt put Radford ahead 41-35 at the break.

The Pioneers came out for the second half with the belief that they could win this game and knotted things up at 45-all early in the second half. It was then that Radford finally woke up and played like everyone expected them to coming into the night. Knocking down eight of their next 10 shots, the Highlanders went on a 19-6 run to take complete control of the game.

The lead grew to 24 with just over seven minutes to go and Radford cruised to the finish from there, finishing with a 33-point advantage. The Highlanders shot 56.8-percent from the field and outscored the Pioneers 61-34 in the second half alone, the third time they've scored 50-plus points in a single period this season.

Glenville State got 17 points and 11 rebounds from junior forward Phil Bledsoe while guards Kalin Johnson (14pts), Darhius Nunn (12pts) and Davion Johnson (12pts) added double-figure scoring totals of their own.

PLAY OF THE GAME

LEAVE IT TO THE BENCH
The Highlanders got an unbelievable effort from their bench on Monday night. Coach Jones utilized a large rotation and was rewarded with 61 points from his bench players including 12 from Greene and Holland, 11 from Tanner and 10 from Hutchinson.

Some fresh faces made a big impact as well with senior forward Tristan Owens (6pts), sophomore forward Leroy Butts (4pts), freshman guard Josiah Jeffers (4pts) and sophomore guard Anias Saunders (3pts) all getting in on the action.

SEASON HIGHS
Radford set team season-highs in the following statistics: Points scored (102) field goals made (40), field goals attempted (77), 3-point field goals attempted (27), free throw percentage (86.7%) and rebounds (48).

QUOTABLE

"Well obviously it was a slow start for us. We came out of the gate just a little nonchalant and casual. Against a team that scores the ball at the rate they do, you can't give them confidence and I thought we gave them a lot of confidence in the first half. The second half was completely different since we finally focused on the gameplan more and made it tough of them. We contest shots and didn't take as many quick shots on the offensive end. I'm proud of the win and the way our guys responded in the second half." - Head Coach Mike Jones

UP NEXT
The Highlanders kick off a five-game road trip when they take on the No. 17 Texas Longhorns in the Frank Erwin Center this Friday, Nov. 30. The game, which is slated for a 7 p.m. ET/6 p.m. CT tip, will be broadcast live on the Longhorn Network.
