HIGHLANDERS PUT UP GREAT FIGHT AGAINST CLEMSON BUT FALL IN FOUR SETS IN THE NIVC SWEET 16

Clemson, S.C. - The Radford women's volleyball team was extremely competitive against the Clemson Tigers but were defeated in the Sweet 16 of the National Invitational Volleyball Championship on Friday evening. The Highlanders' season came to an end after falling in four sets, 18-25, 22-25, 28-26, 14-25. Radford, who won their first-ever major postseason match on Thursday against Appalachian State, finished the season with a 22-7 record and a 12-4 mark in the Big South.

Junior middle Mallory McKnight paced Radford with 12 kills and hit .357 while senior outside hitter Valerie Gonzalez added 11 kills.  Senior middle Amaya Rousseau (10 kills, .421, 3 blocks), senior setter Haley Kleespies (7 kills, 42 assists) and junior outside hitter Stephanie Neast (7 kills) all turned in strong efforts. Freshman libero Grace Green came up with a team-high 17 digs.

FIRST SET
Radford led 6-5 after a kill by freshman Kylie Tuxford but the hosts scored five of the next six points to grab a 10-7 advantage. A kill by Gonzalez brought the Highlanders within 15-13 but the Tigers scored the next two points and the visitors never got any closer. Clemson hit a match-high .500 (17 kills, 2 errors, 30 attempts) in the set.

SECOND SET
Clemson (19-14, 8-10 ACC) jumped out to a 3-1 advantage but the Highlanders went on a 5-1 spurt to grab a 6-4 lead. Gonzalez, Neast and Rousseau all recorded kills during the stretch for Radford. Clemson moved ahead 9-7 but the Highlanders responded with five straight points as they were aided by three hitting errors by the hosts. Radford led 16-14 but Clemson scored five of the next six points to move ahead for good at 19-17. Radford was within striking distance at 24-22 but Brooke Bailey closed out the set for the Tigers with a kill.

THIRD SET
Radford refused to go down without a fight as they surprised Clemson in the frame. Trailing 15-11, the Highlanders went on a set-changing 9-5 run to even the score at 20. Gonzalez, McKnight and Rousseau provided two kills apiece during the stretch.  The Tigers recovered and held two set-points at 24-22 but Radford showed their mettle by ripping off three straight points to take a 25-24 advantage.  Neast and Rousseau provided kills and the hosts committed an error during the run. The Tigers managed to even the score on the next play, however, Tuxford and McKnight bashed consecutive kills to provide Radford with the victory. The Highlanders hit a match-high .410 (19 kills, 3 errors, 39 attempts) in the set.

FOURTH SET
Radford trailed just 6-5 after a service ace by Jordan Coomes but the hosts went on a 7-1 run and the Highlanders could never recover. Clemson limited the Highlanders to a match-low eight kills in the set and a .000 hitting mark.
