2018 MEN'S SOCCER SEASON COMES TO A CLOSE WITH BIG SOUTH SEMIFINAL LOSS

RADFORD, Va. – The 2018 season came to a heartbreaking close on Wednesday night as the Radford men's soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to Presbyterian in the Big South Tournament semifinal.

Coming into Cupp Stadium looking to avenge a loss to PC in the 2017 Big South semis, the Highlanders looked like the better team for the majority of the match. They outshot the Blue Hose, 15-10, including a 9-3 advantage in shots on goal.

Presbyterian managed to take a 1-0 lead against the run of play in the 41st minute, though. A high, bouncing ball into the box led to some miscommunication between teammates and a Radford defender sent the ball into his own net.

Freshman forward Amadou Macky Diop nearly scored an equalizer for Radford in the 49th minute. The Dakar, Senegal native came inches from scoring his 10th goal of the season, but PC goalkeeper Jan Hoffelner just barely got his foot on the shot to deflect it off the post and away harmlessly.

Radford gave its all for the final 41 minutes, but it was the Blue Hose who found the net again. In the 89th minute, Mathias Mikalsen found Marcos Kitromilides for a big insurance goal that sealed the Highlanders' fate.

Diop led all players with seven shots and four shots on goal. Freshman goalkeeper Sam Farrell didn't have many opportunities on shots against him, but he did come away with one save.

The Highlanders showed a ton of fight and steadily improved throughout the season, finishing with an overall record of 7-9 after beginning 0-5. A 5-3 record in conference play gave Radford a top-2 seed in the Big South Tournament for the seventh straight year.

PHYSICAL PLAY
Like many of the games Radford has played this season, things got very physical at times. The Blue Hose received the ire of the refs and were called for 18 fouls compared to just nine fouls committed by Radford. In a six-minute span ranging from 74:12 to 80:37, Presbyterian received three yellow cards.

CORNER KICKS
Radford has worked hard to earn set piece opportunities through corner kicks all season long. In 16 matches, the Highlanders took 93 corner kicks compared to just 57 for opponents.

AROUND THE BIG SOUTH
In the other Big South semifinal match on the night, No. 4 Campbell defeated No. 1 High Point. The score remained 0-0 through regulation and through two overtime periods so penality kicks were required. The Camels then came out victorious, winning PK's by a score of 3-2.

Presbyterian will now host Campbell in the Big South Championship match this Sunday, Nov. 11 at 2 p.m.
