VOLLEYBALL HOLDS OFF USC UPSTATE AS FIVE HIGHLANDERS RECORD DOUBLE-FIGURE KILLS

RADFORD, Va. - - -The Radford women's volleyball team defeated the USC Upstate Spartans, 25-20, 25-27, 25-13, 36-34, on Friday evening at the Dedmon Center.
 
Radford improved to 20-4 (12-3 Big South) while the Spartans dropped to 13-18 (8-8 Big South).
 
Junior middle Mallory McKnight paced five Highlanders in double-digit kills with 16 while senior outside hitter Valerie Gonzalez added 14 kills and 15 digs. freshman Kylie Tuxford (12 kills), senior Amaya Rousseau (12 kills) and junior Stephanie Neast (11 kills) also reached double-figures.  Freshman Grace Green recorded a match-high 18 digs and Haley Kleespies distributed a match-high 51 assists and added two digs.

The Highlanders hit .252 for the match and held their opponent to a .180 mark.

First Set
Tuxford and Gonzalez each had four kills as the Highlanders hit a red-hot .306 for the set.  Green recorded five digs and Kleespies added 11 assists.

Second Set
Radford led 23-17 but the visitors went on a 7-1 run to get even.  With the score knotted at 25, Emily Russell and Madison Haake came up with kills to give the Spartans the win.

Third Set
The Highlanders recovered to hit a match-high .353 in the frame behind six kills by McKnight. Kleespies distributed 13 assists while Gonzalez (5 digs) and Alyssa Carruth (5 digs) played terrific defense.

Fourth Set
Radford won one of the wildest sets of the season as they closed out the match by a count of 36-34. The Highlanders fought off four set points against them, the last coming when the visitors took a 33-32 advantage. McKnight evened the score at 33-all with a kill and then Kleespies served up an ace to make it 34-33. However, the Spartans tied it for the final time at 34 after a kill. Tuxford responded with a clutch kill and McKnight finally closed out the match with a winner off a feed by Tuxford.

The Highlanders will host UNC Asheville on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. for "Senior Day."
