SOFTBALL DEFEATS AUSTIN PEAY AND ETSU IN DAY TWO OF EAGLE ROUND ROBIN

STATESBORO, Ga. – The Radford softball team hit six home runs in two games in day two of the Eagle Round Robin en route to a 7-4 win over Austin Peay and a 3-1 victory against ETSU on Saturday at Eagle Field.

GAME ONE (AUSTIN PEAY)
The Highlanders used the long ball effectively in the first game of the day. Five of the Highlander's 11 hits were home runs, including two by Sofia Tapia. It was the most Highlander home runs hit in a single game since April 9, 2014 in a 10-2 victory over Liberty.

Jessie Marvin (1-0) made her first start and picked up the win. She gave up back-to-back doubles in the first inning that gave Austin Peay a 1-0 lead, before settling in. After a lineout the Governors were close to getting their second run on a Carly Mattson single when Brianna Mills made a stellar throw out of left field to gun the runner down and keep the deficit at one.

The Highlanders answered in the top of the second and tied the game thanks to a Maggie Rowe home run to left field. The following inning saw two Radford home runs hit; a two-run homer by Hunter Mundy and a solo shot by Tapia. The two dingers gave the Highlanders a 4-1 lead.

Talia Douglas hit her first collegiate home run, and second hit of the day, in the fourth inning. The solo shot gave Radford a 5-1 lead. However, the Govs clawed back into the game stringing together a few hits in the sixth inning and cut the Radford lead to one, 5-4.

With three runners on base and two outs in the sixth, Douglas charged in towards a short dribbling ball and made a crisp throw to first base to end the inning.

Tapia gave the Highlanders a little more insurance in the top of the seventh with a one-out two-run home run. Kayla Huffman entered the game in the sixth and picked up the save pitching 1.2 innings allowing only two hits and striking out one. Marvin ended with 5.1 innings pitched, allowed four runs on four hits and struck out five.

GAME TWO (ETSU)
Game two saw timely hitting and great pitching as the game started out in a pitchers duel. Radford's first hit was a single up the middle by Marissa Gagliano to leadoff the game. That was the Highlanders last hit until the fifth inning.

The Highlander pitchers only allowed three hits over the first five innings keeping it a scoreless game. Abby Morrow earned the start and only allowed one hit over two innings with two strikeouts.

Kayla Huffman (1-0) entered in the third inning and pitched three innings. She only allowed two hits and struck out five facing 11 batters. Huffman picked up her first win of the season.

The timely hitting came in the bottom of the fifth as Talia Douglas and Marissa Yow drew one-out walks. Both players advanced a base on a passed ball and Douglas gave Radford a 1-0 lead scoring on a second passed ball. The run would've scored anyway as two pitches later Brittany Wratchford got ahold of one and blasted it to left center field plating herself and Yow to give the Highlanders a 3-1 lead.

Morrow re-entered in the sixth inning allowed two hits and one unearned run to pick up the save.

QUOTABLE
"We were able to add two more team wins today. The pitchers did a great job; Jessie got her first game under her belt and settled in nicely. Abby and Kayla executed the gameplan against ETSU just as we had hoped. Offensively, the aggressive approach that each hitter has brought to the plate is a lot of fun to watch. Up and down the lineup there is home run power and we have seen that as we have totaled eight home runs by seven different batters. We have to stay focused and keep grinding." ~ Hope Creasy
