GAME INFORMATION

  • Location: Dedmon Center (Radford, Va.)

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford men's basketball team earned a crucial 72-53 victory over Campbell in the Dedmon Center Thursday night thanks to a dominant rebounding effort, stingy defense and big contributions from the bench.

Five different Highlanders grabbed five or more rebounds in the game, leading to 39 total compared to just 24 for the Camels. The Radford bench contributed 34 of the team's 72 points on the night, compared to just seven points from Campbell's back-ups.

Sophomore guard Travis Fields Jr. poured in a career-high 13 points on 4-of-7 shooting from the floor and a perfect 4-for-4 night at the free throw line. The Portsmouth, Va. native added five rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Joining him off the bench was sophomore center Devonnte Holland, who had a season-high 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting. Junior guard Caleb Tanner also made major contributions off the bench, scoring nine points with three 3-pointers.

Redshirt freshman Carlik Jones led the Highlanders with 17 points, scoring on six of his nine shot attempts. He stuffed the stat sheet with six rebounds, five assists and a steal.

With the win, Radford improves to 16-12 overall and 9-6 in the Big South the take sole possession of third in the conference. Campbell drops to 14-13 overall and 8-7 in Big South play, moving into a tie for fourth.

An electric crowd filled the Dedmon Center and the Highlanders fed off their energy from the opening tip. Jones scored the first five points of the game before his teammates joined in to build the lead.

A 7-0 run ballooned into an 18-4 run less than seven minutes into the game and then got all the way to 25-4 at the 11:46 mark. Radford went 10-for-14 as the Camels found the bottom of the net only twice in that span.

Campbell managed to fight back however, cutting the deficit to 12 with three straight baskets and a trip to the free throw line. Radford went cold for a stretch, failing to score a field goal between 11:49 and 5:35.

A steal and breakaway layup by Fields Jr. ended an 11-0 run by the visitors and swung the momentum back towards the home bench. An 8-0 run pushed Radford's lead back to 35-19 with 1:28 left in the period.

Through 20 minutes of action, the Highlanders had secured a 37-22 advantage.

The second half was much more even. The Camels hit back-to-back 3-pointers to begin the period, but that would be the longest run by either team for the rest of the game. From the 18:01 mark on, no run by either team exceeded more than four points.

When Campbell hit a shot to cut into its deficit, the Highlanders responded without hesitation. Even when the Camels cut Radford's lead down to 10 with 13:22 to go, Holland hit a layup on the other end to regain some ground.

Campbell's star guard Chris Clemons, who leads the conference and ranks fourth in the NCAA with 24.8 points per game, didn't reach double-digit scoring until there was 6:29 left on the clock in regulation. He finished with 20 points to lead all scorers, but Radford's tough defense kept him at 5-for-17 from the floor and 1-for-11 from 3-point range.

No other Camel managed more than 10 points and only one pulled down five or more rebounds.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Radford improves its advantage in the all-time series with Campbell to 22-18 and halts a four-game skid against the Camels
  • Radford earned a wire-to-wire victory for the first time since beating Winthrop 85-79 on Jan. 3. It's the third wire-to-wire win of the season and second against a DI opponent
  • The win is Radford's largest since beating UNC Asheville, 90-70, on Jan. 6 and is only the second game in their last 11 to be decided by double-digits
  • The Highlanders have forced 10+ turnovers in 13 straight games dating back to the Winthrop game on Jan. 3
  • 21 points is the most Campbell has trailed by in a game all season. Their previous high was 17
  • Jones had made 23 straight free throws spanning seven and a half games before finally missing one in the first half
  • Radford has 11 assists on 26 made field goals
  • Even with a strong offensive output, 53 shot attempts is the least in the last four games for the Highlanders
  • Junior center Darius Bolstad saw the floor first the first time since suffering a knee injury at Nevada on Dec. 17, 2017

QUOTABLE
"It all started earlier today and really Monday. We had a really good practice on Monday after a heartbreaking road loss against a very good team on Saturday. Our guys were really resilient today. They bounced back on Monday, had a subpar practice on Tuesday and had one of our best shoot arounds of the year today. I really thought that after the last three games we grew up a little, just in terms of understanding of why we're putting ourselves in those type of situations and how to not put ourselves in that type of position anymore. I thought we were locked in defensively tonight and maintained that for the whole game. Holding a team as explosive as Campbell to 53 points is really something that we should all be proud of."
