RADFORD SPLITS EXTRA INNINGS GAMES IN BLACK & ORANGE CHALLENGE

MACON, Ga. – The Radford softball team split with Drexel and Mercer in its final day of action in the Black & Orange Challenge as both games went into extra innings. The Highlanders defeated Drexel, 6-5, in 10 innings, but lost a 3-2 heartbreaker to Mercer in eight innings.

Talia Douglas had a stellar performance for the Highlanders (9-4) on Saturday as she had five hits, four RBIs, two doubles and scored two runs in the last day of the challenge.

GAME ONE
The Highlanders had another come-from-behind victory in Macon, Ga., as the tying and go-ahead runs were walked in during the bottom half of the 10th for the 6-5 walk-off victory.

The inning began with Lauren Maddrey being placed on second due to the international tie-breaker rule. Marissa Gagliano was hit by a pitch and a Sofia Tapia sac bunt put Gagliano and Maddrey in scoring position. Drexel (0-3) walked three Highlanders in a row beginning with Hunter Mundy to load the bases, followed by Douglas – that scored Maddrey and tied the game at six – and Maggie Rowe, which allowed Gagliano to score the walk-off run, 6-5.

Radford struck first in the game as Gagliano hit a solo home run to left center field in the bottom of the third. Drexel tied the game in the sixth with a solo shot of their own with no outs and nobody on base.

The game went into extra innings as neither team could score a run in the seventh. That changed in the eighth inning as Kristi DiMeo doubled to right field with one out and scored the Drexel runner placed on second. Taylor M. Lee drove in DiMeo with a two-run home run and gave the Dragons a 4-1 lead. Abby Morrow (6-1) came in and sat the next two batters down with two strikeouts.

All seemed lost for the Highlanders, who were down to their final out with runners at second and third, until Douglas stepped in and blasted a double to the gap in left center field that scored Maddrey and Gagliano and cut the deficit to one run, 4-3. Rowe drove in Douglas, the tying run, with a single to left center field. However, a fly out to left field ended the threat with a runner at first.

The Dragons took the lead once more in the 10th inning as Elena Woulfe reached on a fielder's choice and scored Taylor Kent, the runner placed on second. A swinging strikeout ended the inning for Drexel with a runner on third, which came back to haunt them in the bottom half of the inning.

Jessie Marvin earned the start and had arguably one of the best outings of her young career. She pitched 7.1 innings and struck out a career-high seven batters. She left the game in the hands of Morrow, who came in and struck out three and didn't allow a hit through 2.2 innings of work.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
•  Douglas led the way offensively with a career-high three hits in a 3-for-4 performance with three RBIs. She added a double and one run to her stat line.
•  Gagliano was right there with a 2-for-3 performance and three runs scored, which ties a career-high. She drove in a run with her solo home run.
•  Rowe and Mills each had a hit in the game, while Maddrey scored a career-high tying two runs in the contest.
•  Marvin had a great outing with 7.1 innings pitched and seven strikeouts – both career highs – but surrendered four runs on seven hits.

GAME TWO
The second game of the day was more of a pitcher's duel in the beginning, but ended with a combined 15 hits as the Highlanders fell, 3-2.

Mercer (12-2) had the bases loaded in the third inning thanks to back-to-back-to-back one-out singles. The first run of the game scored on a one-out Radford error, but that's all the Bears could get in the inning as an out at the plate was the second out of the inning kept the game close at 1-0.

As they've done in the past, the Highlanders answered in the top of the fourth. Douglas came up clutch again with an RBI double, which scored Tapia and tied the game at one. Callie Morgan, who made her first plate appearance this season was hit with the bases loaded and drove in the go-ahead run, 2-1.

The Bears tied the game at two with a two-out triple down the left field line that scored Emma Andrew, who reached on a two-out double to right center field. A groundout to Morrow kept the Mercer base runner stranded at third.

Radford couldn't answer in the seventh and Mercer didn't score in the bottom half, which led to extra innings. The Highlanders left two runners on base in the top of the eighth and Mercer only needed two at bats in the bottom half. Caroline Taylor singled to right center that scored Megan Lane for the 3-2 walk-off win.

Morrow (6-2) suffered the loss pitching 7.1 innings and only allowed three runs – two earned – with 16 groundouts.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
•  Mercer outhit Radford, 10-5, and left seven on base.
•  Douglas had two of Radford's five hits and scored one of two runs. She and Tapia had the lone extra-base hits with doubles.
•  The Highlanders drew two walks and had three batters hit by a pitch, but left nine runners on base.
•  Gagliano, Tapia and Maddrey had the other three hits for Radford – all singles.
•  Mercer corralled 10 strikeouts as a pitching staff as starting pitcher Jill McElderry led the squad with nine.
