RADFORD TAKES OVER IN SECOND HALF TO TOP BUTLER, 21-12

GAME INFORMATION
  • Score: Radford 21, Butler 12
  • Records: Radford (3-2) | Butler (0-6)
  • Location: Cupp Stadium | Radford, Va.

RADFORD, Va. – With a narrow lead over a Butler team that just wouldn't go away, the Radford women's lacrosse team went on an eight-goal scoring streak late in the second half to pull away and secure a 21-12 victory at Cupp Stadium on Saturday.

When junior midfielder Callie Bonnel opened the scoring less than a minute into the game, Butler's Ashley Lizzi answered just 27 seconds later. And when sophomore attacker Lindsey Carroll combined with Bonnel for back-to-back goals to give the Highlanders a 3-1 lead, Butler tallied two goals in a row to tie it up.

The two recently started programs battled back-and-forth throughout the first half as neither side could gain much separation. Redshirt sophomore midfielder Brittany Rinaldi scored two of the final three goals before halftime to give the Highlanders an 8-6 lead heading into the break.

Butler came out for the second half motivated to grab its first lead of the game, scoring two goals with a Juliette Ruland goal sandwiched in between, to pull within one at 9-8.

Bonnel netted her third goal of the day with 23:17 remaining to restore Radford's lead to two and from there the two teams traded goals until the Highlanders were hanging on to a 13-11 lead with 14:47 to go.

It was then that the Highlanders took over in front of their home fans. Improvements on draw controls and numerous forced turnovers gave Radford the bulk of possession, allowing junior attacker Adrian Rius to score three goals, Bonnel to score two goals and Carroll, Rinaldi and sophomore attacker Colleen O'Connell to each score one goal all in a 10-minute period.

The 8-0 run gave Radford a commanding 21-11 lead, enacting the 10-goal rule for the first time this season. Butler's free position goal with three seconds left in regulation would bite into the lead, but in the end it didn't matter.

Bonnel and Rius finished with five goals each while Carroll and Rinaldi provided three goals each as well.

21 goals is Radford's best offensive output this season and the most goals scored by the team in a single game since defeated Howard, 20-3, on March 18, 2017.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Bonnel led the team and was tied with Butler's Christi Soderquist for the most of any player with six draw controls
  • Radford outshot Butler, 41-23, including a 21-10 advantage in the second half

 QUOTABLE
"Today we just didn't do a good job of playing a full 60 minutes to the best of our ability. It's very positive that we could still pull off the win and show off our scoring power in the last 15 minutes. Rius and Bonnel were impossible to defend and Brittany Rinaldi came up huge on both sides of the ball." - Head Coach Haley Marvine
