CONWAY, S.C. – Radford dropped the opening game of the 2018 Johnny Gardner Law Group Tournament to Maryland 11-4 as the Terrapins tallied nine runs in the final two innings for the win in the first meeting between the two foes.

Returning to Springs Brooks Stadium on the campus of Coastal Carolina for the first time since 2015, Radford's four runs came on six hits, while the Highlanders left six runners on base.

Knotted at two after seven innings, Maryland tallied six runs in the eighth and three in the ninth, combining for only four hits between the two frames. Each inning saw a two-out three-run home run to stretch the Terps lead.

Radford struck first in the bottom of the second as Straton Podaras reached via a throwing error, scoring two pitches later as Matt Roth lined a two-out double into the left-center field gap. Roth led the Highlanders with two hits on the day, while driving in his fourth run on the season.

The Terps knotted the game one inning later as Richie Schiekofer led off the third with a walk, moving into scoring position on a single and advancing to third on a fly out. Schiekofer crossed the plate on a Marty Costes sacrifice fly to center field.

Maryland starter Taylor Bloom settled into a groove, allowing only one Radford hit over the next four innings. The Terps handed Bloom a 2-1 lead in the fourth on a RBI fielders' choice.

Andrew Nardi came out of the Radford bullpen in the fourth, yielding only three hits until the eighth inning.

As Nardi kept the Highlanders in the game, Radford's bats gained momentum in the seventh as Roth reached on a one-out infield single. Stepping into the box with two outs, Luke Wise ripped a triple into center field, knotting the game at two.

Adam Whitacre reached on a hit by pitch and swiped second to put two Highlanders in scoring positon. However, Kyle Butler was unable to give Radford the lead as he grounded a 1-1 pitch to shortstop for the final out of the frame.

Maryland blew the game wide open in the eighth as the Terps tallied runs on a RBI double, wild pitch, sac fly and home run. Nick Dunn pushed the edge to 8-2 on his fourth home run of the season.

Not backing down, Spencer Horwitz led off the bottom half of the inning with a single and Andrew Szamski followed with a two-run home run to left field, cutting the deficit in half. The home run was the second on the season for Szamski and his second two-run shot.

The Szamski home run proved not to matter as Randy Bednar followed with the Terps' second two-out three-run home run of the game to seal Maryland's 11-8 victory.
