HIGHLANDERS FALL TO UNCG AND NO. 14 GEORGIA IN BULLDOG CLASSIC



ATHENS, Ga. – The Radford softball team opened the Bulldog Classic on Friday at Jack Turner Stadium in Athens, Ga., and fell to UNC Greensboro, 6-2 and No. 14 Georgia, 12-2 in back-to-back games.
 
The Highlanders (10-6) had great performances from Lauren Maddrey and Maggie Rowe, who had six of the Highlanders 11 hits on the day. Maddrey and Lindsey Toneygay picked up their first RBIs of the season as well.
 
GAME ONE
UNC Greensboro (13-3) scored the first run of the game as Kayleigh Willis was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the bottom of the first inning. As they've done in the past, the Highlanders answered in the next frame.
 
Lauren Maddrey, with the bases loaded, singled through the right side and plated Hunter Mundy. The run tied the game at one and was Maddrey's first RBI of the season. However, two strikeouts by the Highlanders ended the top half of the second with the bases loaded.
 
Two Spartan runners reached via errors to with one out in the bottom of the second. The next batter, Makenna Matthijs, scored them with a single up the middle and gave UNCG a 3-1 lead.
 
Radford answered once more in the top of the third as Talia Douglas, who reached on an error, scored from third base on an infield ground ball. Douglas' cut the deficit to one, 3-2.
 
UNCG added to its 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning as Jasmine Palmer scored on a sacrifice fly. Palmer led off the inning with a double to left center. The Spartans added to their lead with two more runs in the sixth inning.
 
With two outs in the seventh, Maggie Rowe reached with her third hit of the contest, but a fielder's choice sealed the victory for the Spartans. Radford left at least one runner on base in six of the seven innings and had a base runner aboard in each inning.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Win: Alicia Bazonski (6-1) (7.0 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 1ER, 3 BB, 7 K)
  • Loss: Abby Morrow (7-3) (7.0 IP, 10 H, 6 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 1 K)
  • Maggie Rowe led all players with three hits, which ties a career-high. She went 3-for-4 with three singles.
  • Hunter Mundy was the other Highlander with a multi-hit game. It was the sophomore's 17th multi-hit game of her career.
  • Marissa Gagliano and Lauren Maddrey picked up the other hits for the Highlanders.
  • The single from Maddrey drove in one of the two runs and was her first RBI of the season.
  • With the hit, Gagliano extended her hitting streak to 10 games.
  • The Highlanders and Spartans both ended the game leaving a combined 17 runners on base. Radford led both teams with nine.
  • Three Spartans had multi-hit games, while Makenna Matthijs led all players with two RBIs.
  • The four errors committed by the Highlanders are the most in a game all season.

GAME TWO
No. 14 Georgia (14-1) did all of its damage in the third inning scoring 11 runs on 11 hits in the 12-2 five-inning victory over Radford, but the Highlanders snapped the Bulldog's six game shutout streak.
 
The two runs came in the fifth inning as Maddrey led off the inning with her second hit of the game. She was out at second by way of a fielder's choice off the bat of Gagliano. Gagliano scored from second on a throwing error by Alysen Febrey, the Bulldog first baseman, for the Highlanders' first run of the game.
 
Lindsey Toneygay, who came in for Rowe, hit the first pitch she saw down the right field line and drove in Talia Douglas for an RBI single and Radford's final run of the contest.
 
Radford picked up some steam in the final three frames with 10 base runners in total, but left seven of them on base. The first Highlander hit came from Maddrey in the third inning, while Douglas and Rowe were hit by a pitch in the fourth and Brittany Wratchford drew a walk before the inning came to an end.
 
The Highlanders faced one of the top pitchers in the country in Brittany Gray (7-0) who now has pitched 39 scoreless innings. She struck out seven in three innings of work and walked one.

  • Loss: Kayla Huffman (2-2) (4.0 IP, 10 H, 7 R, 6 ER, 1 BB, 1 K)
  • With the two runs scored in fifth, the Highlanders broke the Bulldogs streak of six scoreless games.
  • Maddrey led the way offensively for Radford with a 2-for-2 game.
  • Toneygay picked up her first hit and RBI of the season with her RBI single in the fifth inning.
  • Sofia Tapia had the other hit for Radford. She and Gagliano scored the two runs.
  • Gagliano and Wratchford drew two walks, while Douglas and Rowe reached base after getting hit by a pitch.
  • The Bulldogs combined for 11 runs on 14 hits. 10 different Bulldogs had at least one hit in the game and three different players had a multi-hit performance.
  • Cortni Emanuel led all players going 3-for-3 with three runs scored.
 
UP NEXT
Radford looks to bounce back on Saturday against UNC Greensboro at 10:30 a.m., and Jacksonville State in the nightcap at 6 p.m.
