ROCK HILL, S.C. – Six different players scored the nine runs, which is tied for the most all season, as the Radford softball team defeated Winthrop in the series opener at Terry Field on Friday evening.

Radford (15-12, 1-3 Big South) had only scored 12 runs in the first inning all season and added two more to that total on Friday. Talia Douglas plated Marissa Gagliano with a single up the middle and gave Radford a 1-0 lead. Douglas advanced a base on wild throw out of center field and scored a batter later when Maggie Rowe hit a dribbler back up the middle that put the Highlanders ahead, 2-0.

Ansley Gilreath tied the game with one swing of the bat in the second inning. As they have time and time again, the Highlanders answered. They hung a crooked number in the top of the third and took a 7-2 lead.

Sofia Tapia began the inning with a triple down the right field line. After a strikeout, Hunter Mundy was hit by a pitch and put runners at the corners. Rowe drove in her second run of the game, this time on a fielder's choice. The run gave Radford a 3-2 lead with one out and put runners at first and second.

Hannah Medlam reached on an error and Mundy made it a 4-2 game scoring from second on the play. With runners on the corners once again and one out, Marissa Yow gave Radford its first home run since March 5, in the win over Florida A&M. This one was a no-doubter to left field that scored three and gave Radford a comfortable 7-2 lead.

Winthrop (13-15, 3-4 Big South) battled back and cut the lead to four in the third inning with a solo shot from leadoff hitter Ashley Westbrooks. The Eagles then had the bases loaded with one out in the fourth inning, but only got one across on a fielder's choice to Gagliano.

Trouble was brewing in the bottom of the fifth with the Highlanders clinging to a 7-4 lead. The bases were loaded with one out and current pitcher Madyson Watson at the plate. She helped herself out with an RBI single to right field and cut the Radford advantage to two runs, 7-5.

The Eagles only managed to score one run in the inning thanks to nice defensive plays by Medlam. She fielded a ground ball on the next at-bat and threw it to home plate in time for the second out and caught a fly ball in shallow right field for the final out leaving two on base.

Radford added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh as Gagliano scored for the second time of the night when Tapia doubled to left center field for the first. Rowe drove in Tapia with an infield single for the second and made the score 9-5.

Kayla Huffman, who pitched for two innings, picked up two of her three strikeouts in the bottom of the seventh inning and earned her second save of the season.
