CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Radford was unable to battle back from a five-run second inning as the Highlanders stranded nine in an 12-4 loss to Virginia in only the third meeting in the last six years between the Commonwealth foes.

Mother Nature decided to allow the two in-state foes play in 2018 as three of the last five scheduled games between the Highlanders and Cavaliers had been canceled due to rain. During the span, the series was split with Radford winning 9-8 in 2013 and Virginia taking a 11-3 victory in 2016.

Radford struck first in the top half of the opening frame as Kyle Butler led off with a four-pitch walk to extend his on-base streak to 18 straight. Following two fly outs, Matt Roth walked to give the Highlanders two base runners.

Entering the game with only two hits with runners in scoring position, Will Harless lined a 0-1 pitch into right field as Butler beat the throw home for the first Radford run. Harless' two-out single resulted in the eighth RBI of his freshmen campaign.

Virginia answered the Harless' two-out single with a two-out hit of its own as Andy Weber sent a solo shot over the right field fence for his third home run of 2018 to knot the contest.

Following Radford stranding its third base runner in the first two innings, Virginia blew the game open with a five-run second inning on six hits. In the frame, Brendan Rivoli and Cayman Richardson provided a pair of two-RBI base hits to give the Cavaliers a 6-1 edge.

After a three up, three down third inning by both teams, Radford's offense came back with a run in the fourth.

The first two batters reached base as Harless led off the frame with a walk and Straton Podaras was hit for the ninth time on the season. Anthony Miano moved the runners up on his first sacrifice bunt of the season. The sac bunt set up a Garrett Matheny RBI ground out for Radford's second run of the game.

Virginia answered back with two runs in the bottom half of the frame with a pair of RBI singles from Tanner Morris and Alex Tappen.

Trailing 8-2, Radford added a run in the fifth as Colby Higgerson ripped a double to left-center, scoring on a Roth two-out RBI single to right field. The Roth RBI was his 21st on the season and his 10th in the last six games.

Cody Boone tossed two innings of relief out of the bullpen, yielding only two hits. Boone has tossed 6.1 straight frames without giving up an earned run. The two-inning outing marked the third straight by Boone.

Higgerson led off the seventh with a single to left field as he was the lone Highlander with two hits in the contest. The redshirt sophomore became the fifth Highlander with 10 multi-hit games on the year as he pushed his hitting streak to four straight.

Virginia added four runs in the ninth on a two-out grand slam by Tappen to seal the 12-4 victory.

Not going down without a fight, Radford's fourth run came in the ninth as Butler extended his hit streak to seven straight with a one-out single to center. Spencer Horwitz picked up his 25th RBI with a single to right-center.
