RADFORD ROUTS GARDNER-WEBB; TAKES SERIES IN DOUBLEHEADER SWEEP

RADFORD, Va. – 21 runs on 23 hits in two games was the key component in Radford's doubleheader sweep over Gardner-Webb on Saturday at the Radford Softball Stadium. The Highlanders won the series opener, 8-1 and clinched the series with a 13-0 five-inning victory in game two.

Seven of the 23 hits were of the extra-base variety, including two home runs from Hunter Mundy and one each from Maggie Rowe and Brianna Mills. Radford combined for four doubles in the afternoon with two coming from Marissa Gagliano in one game.

GAME ONE
  • Score: Radford 8, Gardner-Webb 1
  • Records: Highlanders (25-15, 7-6 Big South) | Runnin' Bulldogs (27-21, 8-8 Big South)
  • Location: Radford Softball Stadium | Radford, Va.

Radford began the scoring brigade early with seven combined runs through the first three innings. The Highlanders used four hits in a row in the second inning to take an early 2-0 lead. The inning continued and a two-out error by the Gardner-Webb shortstop, Katie Stettler, allowed two more runs to score before the end of the inning.

The Highlanders picked up right where they left off in the second inning as Hannah Medlam led off the third with a single right up the middle. Maggie Rowe drove her in and made it 6-0 with a booming shot to straight away center field.

Hunter Mundy gave Radford a 7-0 lead and back-to-back yaks after putting one in the trees just as Rowe did in center field.

It was only a matter of time that the nations leading home run hitter would make her appearance known and she did just that in the top of the fourth. Freshman Katie Prebble hit her 22nd home run of the season to leadoff the inning. However, it was limited damage done and the Highlanders maintained a 7-1 lead.

Kayla Huffman (8-4) bounced back in the inning and picked up two strikeouts. She cruised for the remainder of the game and only allowed two more base runners. She finished with only four hits permitted and seven strikeouts.

Sofia Tapia added the eighth run of the game scoring on the Runnin' Bulldogs third error of the contest in the sixth inning.

  • Records: Highlanders (26-15, 7-6 Big South) | Runnin' Bulldogs (27-22, 8-9 Big South)

Highlighted by an eight run third inning, Radford scored a season-high 13 runs and set a new season-high with 14 hits in the series-clinching 13-0 victory in game two.

Tapia picked up the Highlanders' first hit and came around to score the first run when Medlam drove her in with a two-out double.

Marissa Gagliano gave the Highlanders a 4-0 lead in the second inning with a three-run double. Mundy scored from third, while Mills reached home from second and the speedy Lauren Maddrey scored all the way from first.

The cushiony 4-0 lead grew to an almost insurmountable hole for the Runnin' Bulldogs. Medlam began the inning with her second hit of the game, a single to right field. After a walk, Hunter Mundy cranked a 3-2 pitch to left field that fell just short of hitting the Sioros Center. The home run gave Radford a 7-0 lead.

That was not the only home run of the inning as Mills belted a 2-2 pitch over the left field fence just one batter later and gave them a 6-0 lead. The home run gave Sam Harrell and early exit and Madi Lewis took over on the rubber.

She didn't have the answer either as Maddrey reached with a single to left field and Gagliano moved her over to second drawing a walk. After the second out of the inning, Talia Douglas drove in the speedsters and gave Radford a 10-0 lead. A walk and two stolen bases put runners in scoring position and Rowe tallied her 34th and 35th RBI of the season with a two-run single up the middle. The Highlanders scored eight runs on six hits in the third and held a 12-0 lead.

Gagliano made sure the lead would increase as she tallied her second double of the game for just the second time in her career with an RBI double that plated Maddrey for the third time.

Abby Morrow (16-9) pitched another gem going four innings with only four hits allowed and one walk. Jessie Marvin made a relief appearance and earned a three up, three down fifth inning that sealed the victory.

QUOTABLE
"This was a big time doubleheader sweep for us. Gardner-Webb is a great offensive team and holding them to one run is something I'm very proud of. Our pitching staff as a whole did great and so did our offense. Today was probably one of our best team wins this season, which is great for this time of the year. We need to stay focused and work to sweep the series on Sunday." – Hope Creasy
