RADFORD WINS PITCHERS DUEL WITH PRESBYTERIAN ON SENIOR NIGHT

RADFORD, Va. – Three Highlanders were honored prior to first pitch of Friday's series opener with Presbyterian and Abby Morrow – one of the three honorees – was stellar in the circle as Radford won the pitchers duel, 2-1.

A great defensive night for Radford was capped off on the final play of the game. With the tying run on second base and one out in the seventh, Presley Bissett hit a sharp ground ball to Talia Douglas at third. Douglas threw the ball across the diamond to get Bissett for the second out of the inning. Hunter Mundy, who has played 23 games at third this season, fired a bullet back to the third base side. Marissa Gagliano, the everyday shortstop, was covering the bag and applied the tag to the Blue Hose runner trying to move up 60 feet for the final out of the game.

It was Radford's second double play of the evening and the pitching did not disappoint either.

The senior pitched her 62nd career complete game and only allowed one unearned run that came in the first inning. She settled down and retired the next eight batters, but gave up a hit to Megan Anderson in the fourth. Morrow allowed a bloop hit to right field on the ensuing at-bat. Brianna Mills fired a rocket to Douglas at third and beat the PC runner by five steps for the final out of the fourth inning.

Morrow (19-9) only allowed two more hits the entire night and relied on her defense to make the plays behind her as she has done all season long. Once again, the senior did not allow a walk in her seven innings pitched.

The Blue Hose made some outstanding defensive plays the entire game, but could do nothing about the Douglas home run that gave Radford a 2-1 lead in the first inning. Gagliano led off the Highlander hitting with her 22nd walk of the year and swiped second on a delayed steal. After a foul out to a busy Chelsea Lyons in left field, Douglas stepped in and blasted a 3-1 pitch over the fence in left field. The low line drive home run was the freshman's fifth home run of the season and gave Radford all the offense it needed.

The Blue Hose used speed to score the first run of the game as Ansley Wilbanks reached with a slap single to third base. Douglas threw the ball over the head of Mundy and allowed Wilbanks to scamper to second. She scored a single by Macy Hyatt, the teams leading hitter, and gave them a 1-0 lead.

Just as they ended the game in the seventh inning the Highlander defense went around the horn for an inning-ending double play that ended the first inning scoring threat.
