HIGHLANDERS DROP 5-1 CONTEST TO APP STATE

RADFORD, Va. – Radford dropped its fourth straight as the Highlanders fell victim to Appalachian State with a 5-1 decision Tuesday night in a battle between border foes.

For the fourth straight game a Radford opponent scored in the top of the first as Bailey Welch lined a double to right field, advancing to third on a bobble by Andrew Szamski. Kendall McGowan launched a 0-1 pitch over the left-center field wall to give Appalachian State a 2-0 lead.

Radford starter Brandon Donovan settled down after the two-run inning as the redshirt sophomore allowed a walk, hit by pitch and nothing else after the home run. Donovan struck out one in three innings of work, making his first start in Carter Memorial Stadium.

After Donovan kept the Mountaineer bats in check, newly entered Grayson Lamb walked the bases loaded in the fourth with one out. Appalachian State added a run on a Beau Myers' sacrifice fly to center field and an Alex Leshock single to right.

Trailing 4-0, Matt Roth added Radford's lone run on the day with a two-out solo shot to center field for his fourth round-tripper on the season to tie him for the team lead.

Following Appalachian State's second two-run inning, freshman Cody Boone came out of the bullpen to toss two scoreless frames, yielding only a hit with two punch outs. The two frames mark a new season high for the frosh.

Appalachian State starter Brandon Boone held Radford to only one hit and one walk over the next three frames. Boone was sensational on the evening, yielding only one run on four hits, while striking out six Highlanders.

The Mountaineers added its fifth run in the eighth on a bases loaded walk. Radford pitchers combined to walk six Mountaineers on the night.

Roth picked up his seventh multi-hit game on the season with a single to left field to leadoff the ninth. Following two strikeouts, Carlin Christian kept the inning alive with a single to right field. The two runners moved up a base as CJ Brown ran past the ball in the right.

With an opportunity to plate two runs with the swing of the bat, Kyle Butler flew out to left field on the first pitch he faced, ending the contest.
