BOONE, N.C. – Radford closed out non-conference play Tuesday night with an 8-3 victory over Appalachian State in which three Highlanders finished with multi-hit games to split the season series with the Mountaineers.

Improving 23-28 on the season, Radford totaled 12 hits with eight different Highlanders picking up a base hit. Leading the way with a trio of multi-hit performances was Matt Roth, Andrew Szamski and Straton Podaras. Roth went 3 for 4 on the day with two RBIs.

The Highlanders continued their streak of jumping on teams early as the Highlanders improved to 10-4 when scoring in the first inning.

Luke Wise reached base safely to open the game as he was hit by a pitch and Spencer Horwitz followed with a one-out single through the right side, putting Highlanders on the corners. The Highlanders first run came via its double-steal play as Horwitz broke for second, forcing a throw from the Mountaineer catcher, which allowed Wise to trot home.

Roth was hit by a pitch for only the second time on the season and Podaras earned his 23rd walk to load the bases with two outs.

Entering the game with 10 two-out RBIs, Colby Higgerson collected his 14th two-out hit on the season with a single through the left side, plating two runs to extend the early lead to 3-0.

Ryan Bywaters took the early lead and went to work in the bottom half, striking out two batters with only nine pitches for three outs.

The Highlanders followed the three-run first inning with a three-run second inning on three hits. Richard De la Cruz began the inning with a single through the left side. Following two outs, Horwitz earned a four-pitch walk to put two runners on.

Returning to the lineup on Sunday, Szamski lined a single into right field to plate De la Cruz for his first RBI since March 31, increasing his total to 19 on the season. Moving to third base on the single, Horwitz would later score on a balk by newly entered Appalachian State pitcher Andrew Papp.

Following the balk, Roth worked a full count on six pitches, taking a bloop single into center field for his 34th RBI and a Radford six-run lead.

Picking up his first collegiate win, Bywaters stranded a pair of runners on base in the second and one in the third as he tossed three scoreless frames with three punch outs.

Appalachian State got a run back in the bottom half of the fourth on a Conner Leonard RBI single after Kendall McGowan led off the inning with a double down the right field line. Grayson Lamb worked out of the frame with a 6-4-3 double play as the Highlanders turned their 39th double play on the season.

After scoring six runs on five hits in the first two frames, Radford was limited to two hits over the next four innings by the Appalachian State bullpen. The Mountaineers added two runs in the sixth inning on three hits, scoring on a ground out and single.

The offensive drought for the Highlanders ended in the seventh as Szamski lined a two-out double off the center field fence to become the first Radford player with two hits on the day. Szamski was only on base for two pitches before Roth followed with his second hit and RBI on the day with a single to left field.

Podaras joined the duo with his second hit in the game as Radford recorded three straight base hits but only managed one run in the seventh.

Kyle Butler became the eighth different Highlander to pick up a hit as he lined a two-out triple down the right field line after battling for 10 pitches to plate De la Cruz, who reached on a walk. Radford's 17th triple on the season and Butler's third closed out the Radford 8-3 victory.
