CHARLESTON, S.C. – Falling behind by three runs in the first inning provided a tough task at hand for the Highlanders and turned out to be the difference in a 4-1 series opening loss to Charleston Southern on Friday afternoon at CSU Softball Field.

Radford fell behind early 3-0 in the first inning as Charleston Southern tallied three consecutive RBI hits, all-coming with two outs. Jade Gandara singled through the left side with one out and advanced to second on a groundout to third base.

Annie Bakenhus doubled home Gandara from second and gave the Bucs a 1-0 lead. That began the three consecutive hits as Sarah Brown and Laina Holmgren created an even bigger hole for the Highlanders with an RBI single and double, respectively.

Lauren Maddrey gave Radford its first hit of the game in the third inning with a single through the left side. Marissa Gagliano singled down the right field line and put runners at the corners with one out. After a strikeout, Talia Douglas drew a five-pitch walk that loaded the bases.

Hannah Medlam was hit by the third pitch of the at-bat and drove cut the deficit to two runs, 3-1. The next batter, Maggie Rowe hit a screaming line drive, but it was right at Brown, the CSU third baseman, for the final out of the inning.

The Highlanders had something cooking in the fourth innings with two runners on base and one out, but they could not get a ball to go out of the infield as the inning came to an end. Medlam almost cut the Buccaneer lead to one run with two outs in the fifth, when she hit a ball to straightaway center field. The wind carried the ball far enough to get over the fence, but not far enough that Annie Bakenhus made a play and brought it back in the yard, robbing Medlam of her first home run of the season.

CSU added to its lead in the bottom of the sixth as Brown picked up her second hit and second RBI of the day with a solo home run to center field.
