HIGHLANDERS DROP 1-0 DECISION TO ODU IN OPENER


 
NORFOLK, Va. – A 20th minute goal proved to be the difference as the Radford men's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to Old Dominion at the ODU Soccer Complex on Friday night.
 
The Highlanders (0-1) received the first pair of chances in the contest as redshirt senior Kieran Roberts got two shots off before the Monarchs (1-0) took any of their own. Unfortunately, in a game with limited chances across the entire 90 minutes, ODU managed to make one count as Hans Kroschwitz sent a curling cross into the box where Max Wilschrey connected and headed it into the top, right corner of the net.
 
Despite trailing going into halftime, Radford came out of the lockerroom looking like the better team and nearly found an equalizer in the 47th minute. Following a header from Roberts that went wide, freshman Amadou Diop nearly found the back of the net. Dribbling in the box, Diop cut back onto his right foot to lose two defenders and fired only to have ODU goalkeeper Mertcan Akar make a huge save.
 
A potential comeback bid hit a snag then hit a snag in 57th minute. Already sitting on a yellow card he received just 41 seconds into the game, senior Myles Yorke was shown a second yellow and was subsequently sent off.
 
Playing with 10 men, the Highlanders earned a couple more solid looks in the attacking third, but were unable to tie the game before the clock hit zero.
 
STAT OF THE MATCH
Even playing down a man for 33 minutes, Radford was only outshot by two, 11-9, on the night. A physical game that saw a combined 25 fouls called made it tough for either side to hold possession very long or create many chances.
 
NEWCOMERS' IMPACT
Several newcomers to the squad showed that they can make an impact this season. Senior Gonzalo Rodriguez handled the majority of set pieces with multiple free kicks and five corner kicks. Diop tied for the team lead in shots with two after coming off the bench and junior Robbie Johnson made two saves.

UP NEXT
The Highlanders will make the trip from Norfolk to Richmond to take on the VCU Rams this Sunday, Aug. 26. The game is slated for a 5 p.m. kickoff.
