Â
RADFORD, Va. – Blacksburg native and Indiana University track star Kendell Wiles has joined the Radford track & field program as a volunteer assistant coach for the 2018-19 season.
Â
Wiles returns to the New River Valley as both a student and a coach for the Highlanders. She will be enrolling at the University and working towards her Master's degree in Mental Health Counseling while volunteering for the cross country, indoor track & field and outdoor track & field seasons.
Â
"I'm really thankful for this opportunity to work a great group of student-athletes," Wiles said. "I feel like I can bring some good insight with my track experience at Indiana University and being from right here in Virginia. Thank you to Radford University and our coaches for allowing me to help the team, I'm really excited to see what this group can do!"
Â
In her time at Blacksburg High School, Wiles set school records in the 200-meter, 300-meter, 400-meter and 500-meter. She became a three-time Virginia state champion with titles in the 400 (2014) and indoor 500 (2013, 2014).
Â
From there, she made her way to Indiana where she established herself as one of the most talented 800-meter runners in the Big Ten Conference. Wiles became a national qualifier in the East Region for the 800m as well as in the 4x400-meter relay. She was the 2018 Big Ten runner-up in the 800m and finished third in the 600-meter at the Indoor Big Ten Championships.
Â
Her stellar career PR's are as follows:
400m – 54.24
500m – 1:11.63
600m – 1:27.98
800m – 2:05.44
Â
Now, Wiles will have the opportunity to share her knowledge and experience with the next generation of runners here at Radford.
Â
"We are thrilled to add Kendell to our staff, not only because of her success in collegiate track, but because of her ties to the local community," Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Brent Chumbley said. "She transformed herself to become one of the best in the Big Ten. She exemplifies the qualities we look for in our own athletes."
Â
Followers of the Virginia Tech football program may already recognize the Wiles name. Kendell's father, Charley Wiles, has served as the Hokies' defensive line coach for 23 years now.
