ROCK HILL, S.C. – True freshman Kylie Tuxford tied a season-high with 11 kills and led Radford to a Wednesday night sweep over Winthrop at Winthrop Coliseum in Rock Hill, S.C.
Â
Tuxford was one of three Highlanders with double-digit kills. The freshman from Mechanicsville, Va., led all players with 11, while Mallory McKnight and Valerie Gonzalez tallied 10. Tuxford added three blocks, while McKnight picked up two and Gonzalez totaled two service aces with nine digs.
Â
SET ONE
The Highlanders took advantage of a couple of Winthrop miscues and took a 13-8 lead in the first set. Following a Winthrop timeout, three kills and two more Eagle mistakes gave Radford an 18-12 advantage. A 7-2 run was all she wrote as Radford went up 1-0 with a 25-15 first set victory.
Â
SET TWO
Set two was a little closer as Winthrop took a 6-4 lead. Seven unanswered, thanks to four kills and three errors, gave Radford the lead once more. The Highlanders kept the pressure on and held a three to five point cushion, until late in the set. Winthrop went on a mini run and cut the deficit to one, 23-22. Knowing that this was a big set McKnight received a good pass from Haley Kleespies and increased the lead, 24-22. Another Winthrop miscue ended the set, 25-22.
Â
SET THREE
With the set tied at four, Radford went on a 4-0 run and took an 8-4 lead. That was the last time Winthrop was within one of the Highlanders. Radford went on a tear and piled on 16 kills – a set-high – and held the Eagles to seven, set-low. Holding Winthrop to seven kills and a .054 hitting percentage lifted Radford to a comfortable 25-15 victory.
