RADFORD DROPS NAIL-BITER AT GEORGIA SOUTHERN

STATESBORO, Ga. - Down by three, Carlik Jones took a half court heave with time expiring that would've extended the game into overtime. His shot looked good but hit the back iron and the Highlanders fell to Georgia Southern, 76-73, at Hanner Fieldhouse on Friday night.
 
Just two possessions before, Jones hit a 3-pointer that made it a 73-70 game with 22.1 seconds to play. Georgia Southern's Calvin Wishart was fouled and made the front end of a one-and-one to give the Eagles a 74-70 lead with 17 seconds to play.
 
On the ensuing possession, Jones made another 3-pointer to cut the deficit to one with six ticks left on the clock. Just three seconds later Elijah Mccadden was fouled and made two clutch free throws. All the Highlanders could do was tie the game.
 
The man who has hit so many clutch shots throughout his career received the inbounds pass. He dribbled up the floor and took a shot just a few steps in front of half court as the final horn sounded. The clean look hit the back iron and the Highlanders came up just short.
 
Radford took a six-point lead into the locker room and extended that lead to nine out of the break, 44-35. Over the next five minutes, Georgia Southern went on a 14-2 run and took a 49-46 lead with 12:23 remaining.
 
Moments later, everything looked to be in Radford's favor with a five-point lead and 3:59 left to play. However, the hometown team scored the next nine points and regained the lead with 2:07 on the clock. The Highlanders kept chipping away at the lead but were unable to come back.  
 
Neither team could get anything going offensively from the opening tip until Georgia Southern took a one-point lead, 9-8, with 13:41 to play in the first half. Then Radford found the spark offensively.
 
Jones sprinted around the defense for a layup and Quinton Morton-Robertson hit his first collegiate 3-pointer to regain the lead for Radford, 13-9. Devin Hutchinson took over the next four minutes scoring all of his eight points giving Radford a seven-point advantage, 21-14, with 7:09 to play.
 
The teams traded buckets until Devine Eke gave Radford an eight-point lead before Georgia Southern cut it to six before the end of the half.
 
Radford had 10 second chance points and 13 points off turnovers at the end of the first half. At the end of the game, the Highlanders had 17 second chance points and 17 points off turnovers – only seven and four more in the second half, respectively. Georgia Southern shot 52.8 percent in the second half after being held to 40 percent in the first.
 
STAT OF THE GAME
The Radford bench showed how deep and deadly it can be, outscoring the Eagles bench, 39-12. Cle'von Greene and Eke had 28 of the bench points scoring 14 each. It was a career-high for Greene and a season-high for Eke.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Jones led all players with 18 points, while Greene and Eke's 14 were second on the team. Eke led the Highlanders with eight rebounds, while Jones tallied a game-high seven assists. The Eagles outshot Radford from the field but Highlanders outshot Georgia Southern from the charity stripe.
 
QUOTABLE
"We were scoring pretty well in the second half especially at the beginning and we just couldn't get enough stops," Mike Jones said. "There were a lot of little things that we didn't do down the stretch. Things like offensive rebounds and allowing them to get into the paint causing our rotations to break down."
