Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

HIGHLANDERS FALL TO MONMOUTH ON TUESDAY NIGHT

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – The Radford men's basketball team fell to Monmouth, 80-63, on Tuesday night at OceanFirst Bank Center in West Long Branch, N.J.

Radford (2-4) tallied the lowest shooting percentage it has had all season going 23-for-66 from the field (34.8 percent). The Highlanders took the lead once in each half but Monmouth had small spurts of points that helped them regain the lead and keep a one or two possession cushion for a majority of the game.

After falling behind, 13-4, from the opening tip, the Highlanders went on a 10-0 run and took its first lead of the game. Josiah Jeffers started the run with a jumper on the baseline with 13:53 on the clock. Then Carlik Jones took over with six straight points to cut the Monmouth lead to one. Lewis Djonkam gave Radford a 14-13 lead with a layup that completed the run.

Monmouth (3-5) quickly took the lead once again with a 7-0 run. The Hawks led 22-16 with eight minutes remaining but Jones and Travis Fields, Jr., scored a combined six points in less than two minutes and tied the game at 22. The two teams battled back and forth but Radford never took the lead again in the half. The Highlanders only cut the Monmouth lead to two a trio of times and the Hawks had a 39-35 lead at the end of the first 20 minutes.

Jones and Fields Jr., had 27 of Radford's 35 first half points. Jones led with 14 and Fields Jr., tacked on 13. However, the Highlander starters had eight of the team's 12 fouls through the half.

Radford opened the second half with a 7-2 run that was highlighted by a Donald Hicks 3-pointer. His second 3-ball of the night gave the Highlanders a 42-41 lead just a minute and a half into the second half. The Hawks went on another run, this one was an 8-0 spurt that gave them a 49-42 lead with 14:49 to play. Four of their eight points during the run came at the charity stripe. The Hawks finished with 33 free throw attempts compared to the Highlanders' 16.

Already with two fouls, Jones picked up his fourth with 14:55 remaining in the game. He didn't check back into the game until the 5:13 mark. Radford, playing without the current Big South Player of the Week, cut the lead to as low as four points, 52-48, thanks to Hicks' third and final 3-pointer of the night. The Highlanders looked to make a run with 12:23 remaining.

Unfortunately, that was the closest Radford got in the final 12 minutes of play as the Hawks went on a 21-11 run and took a 17-point lead – its largest of the night – with 1:26 to play. A couple of layups by Jones and Devin Hutchinson cut the deficit to 14 with 57 seconds remaining but Monmouth hit three free throws that kept the 17-point cushion as time expired.

TWEET OF THE GAME

QUOTABLE
"They're a good team," Mike Jones said." They're a very aggressive team. We put them on the (free throw) line way too much and let them have some easy scoring opportunities and they were able to run away with it. For the most part I thought our team played tough. We certainly made some mistakes that really could've helped us out because it was a one or two possession game for most of the game. We just kind of let it go. I give a lot of credit to King Rice and the kind of coach he is and his team for how talented they are."
