HIGHLANDERS EDGED BY UMASS LOWELL, 7-6, IN FIRST GAME OF TWO-GAME SET

Radford, Va - The Radford baseball team was edged by UMass Lowell, 7-6, on Tuesday evening at Carter Memorial Stadium. Radford slipped to 4-11 while the River Hawks improved to 2-12.

Shortstop Colby Higgerson went 3-for-4 with a home run and left-fielder Adam Whitacre was 2-for-4 with an RBI to lead the Highlander offense.  Catcher Straton Podaras also added a couple of runs batted in.

The visitors got on the board in the opening inning as first baseman Steve Passatempo took Highlander right-handed starter Brandon Feathers (3.0 innings, 1 earned run) deep over the right field fence.

Radford answered right back in the bottom of the frame as right fielder Andrew Szamski smoked an RBI single to center to score center fielder Kyle Butler.

The River Hawks got an unearned run in the second inning, however, the Highlanders responded with three straight runs to grab a 4-2 lead. Whitacre smacked an RBI double to right to score Szamski and Podaras drove in a run with a groundout to account for the scoring in the third. Higgerson then belted his second homer to left in the bottom of the fourth.

UMass-Lowell scored the next five runs with two in the sixth and two more in the top of the seventh. An insurance run in the eighth proved to be crucial as the Highlanders tried to rally late.

Podaras cut the deficit to 7-5 as he lifted a sacrifice fly to plate Whitacre in the eighth.

First baseman Spencer Horwitz hit a laser to right for his second bomb of the season with two outs in the ninth. Szamski then reached on an error, however, designated hitter J.D. Mundy struck out swinging to end the game.

Cody Boone took the loss to drop to 0-2 after allowing two unearned runs in the seventh inning.

Designated hitter Andrew Roden went 2-for-5 with and RBI to lead the River Hawks.

The series will resume on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m.
