RADFORD LACROSSE FIGHTS BACK AT FRESNO STATE

FRESNO, Calif. – Scoring five of the final six goals in the game, the Radford women's lacrosse team nearly charged all the way back from a five-goal deficit, but it wasn't meant to be in a 15-14 loss to Fresno State on Friday night.

Trailing 15-10 with 6:37 left in the game, the Highlanders refused to go away. Senior attacker Adrian Rius absolutely took over, scoring four straight goals in the final five minutes to give her team a fighter's chance before the clock struck zero.

The Boca Raton, Fla. native led all players with six goals and an assist for seven points. She needed only eight shot attempts to do all that damage while adding two ground balls and one draw control.

Sophomore attacker Jennifer Shield also played a major role in Radford's comeback effort, scoring two goals and providing two assists on the night. Senior midfielders Emma Rogers and Callie Bonnel were solid in the attack with four goals and two goals respectively.

Head Coach Haley Hardy rewarded Maddie Mashewske with her first start of the season at goalie and she played well overall. The junior made 11 saves and tallied up a .423 save percentage. Freshman Katie Bendrick helped her out a ton on defense, leading Radford with seven draw controls, four caused turnovers and three ground balls.

Fresno State scored the first goal of the game just a little over a minute into the action, Bonnel answered quickly to knot things at one apiece. Mashewske did well to make a pair of saves before the Bulldogs struck for two more goals in rapid succession.

Rius notched her first goal of the game shortly thereafter, but Fresno State reeled off a 4-0 run that put them in control. They took a 10-6 lead into halftime and forced the Highlanders to play catchup for the rest of the game.

The two sides alternated scoring chances to begin the second half and it was the Bulldogs who managed to string multiple goals together first to make it 14-9. From there the clock was against Radford and the win wasn't meant to be despite a fantastic effort.
