SOFTBALL DROPS PAIR OF CONTESTS AT CHANTICLEER SHOWDOWN

CONWAY, S.C. – The Radford softball team dropped a pair of games on Saturday afternoon at Conway, S.C. The first was an 8-3 contest against UNLV and the second was a 5-2 loss versus Jacksonville.

GAME ONE vs. UNLV
Playing as the designated visitor, the Highlanders drew a pair of one-out walks in the top of the first inning. On the ensuing at-bat, Maggie Rowe reached on a fielder's choice but Tapia – who drew the first walk – got thrown out trying to score on an error. The Highlanders left a couple of runners on the bases as the first inning came to a close on a swinging strikeout.

The pair of runners stranded came back to bite the Highlanders as UNLV scored four runs on three hits in the bottom half. The Mountain West's top hitter Lauryn Tycksen singled to center field and stole second to leadoff the home half. The first run of the game came on a Highlander throwing error and back-to-back singles increased the lead to 4-0, before a couple of groundouts got the Highlanders of the inning.

After Jessie Marvin settled in and hung zeros on the board in the next three innings, the Highlander offense did its part. Brooke Bond and Callie Morgan cut the lead in half with RBI singles through the left side in the fourth and fifth innings, respectively.

The Runnin' Rebels answered when Radford started chipping away at the lead. Justine Federe increased UNLV's lead back to four, 6-2, with a home run to left field in the bottom of the fifth. They weren't done scoring as a sacrifice fly and an RBI double made it an 8-2 contest.

Bond had her second hit and RBI of the game with a solo shot to left field in the sixth inning. That's the last time the Highlanders scored despite getting a pair of runners on base in the top of the seventh.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Talia Douglas and Bond went a combined 5-for-7. Douglas had three hits and scored one run, while Bond had two hits, a home run and an RBI. Maggie Rowe had the only other extra base hit with a double. Hannah Morris pitched 1.2 innings of relief and only allowed one hit. UNLV had one three players with multi-hit games.

GAME TWO vs. JACKSONVILLE
Kayla Huffman gave up a sacrifice fly in the first inning but did not allow a single run for the next 4.1 innings. The senior struck out eight of her 10 batters over that time frame, including six in a row. Sofia Tapia answered with a solo home run in the bottom half of the inning and tied the game up at one.

Neither team could get anything going until the fourth inning when Destiny Freeman plated pinch runner Sienna Williams with a double to right field. Williams pinch ran for Ellie Rowe who reached with a single. The Williams run put the Highlanders on top 2-1 until the Dolphins threatened in the fifth.

Three consecutive one out singles loaded the bases. Hanah Roberts lined a ball right to Hannah Medlam in left field for the second out. In the same play, Medlam threw out Victoria Rodebaugh trying to score and ended the inning. The double play kept the Radford lead intact.

The lead didn't stay intact long when a two-run home run gave Jacksonville the lead back, 3-2. Roberts gave the Dolphins some insurance with a home run to center field in the seventh. The two-run homer increased the lead to three, 5-2.

Radford saw six pitches in the seventh inning and pop out in foul territory ended the game.
