BASEBALL WINS FIFTH STRAIGHT AFTER BLANKING APPALACHIAN STATE ON TUESDAY EVENING

Radford, VA. - Catcher Will Harless and second baseman David Bryant both drove in a pair of runs to help lead the Radford baseball team to a 5-0 victory against Appalachian State, on Tuesday evening at Carter Memorial Stadium.  Radford has now won five straight and improved to 11-13 overall. Appalachian State fell to 10-13.

Starter Hunter Williams did not stay around long enough to qualify for the victory, but he failed to allow a run and scattered three hits in 3.2 innings of work.  Relievers Cody Boone (1.1 inning), Austin Gerber (3.0 inning) and Cameron Fritz (1.0 inning) all were effective out of the bullpen.

Harless went 2-for-3 with a walk and right fielder Andrew Szamski went 2-for-4. Third baseman Matt Roth was 1-for-2 with two runs scored and a pair of walks.

Radford scored two runs in the bottom of the second and never looked back.  The Highlanders scored their first two runs without getting a hit.  Left fielder Adam Whitacre and Roth walked to open the frame. Shortstop Colby Higgerson was hit by a pitch and then Harless drew an RBI walk to plate Whitacre.  After a pitching change, Bryant smoked an RBI sacrifice line out to left, scoring Roth.

The Highlanders grabbed a 3-0 lead with three hits in the bottom of the fifth inning. Center fielder Kyle Butler singled to left and stole second after first baseman Spencer Horwitz popped up to first. Szamski then followed with a long drive to right center that was originally ruled a catch at the wall. However, the umpires reversed the call and awarded Szamski a single. Designated hitter J.D. Mundy delivered a sharp RBI single to right to plate Butler.

The Highlanders added another run in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI double by Harless to left center. Higgerson, who had reached on a fielder choice, raced around from first base to score the run.

Harless set-up the final run of the game when he singled through the left side to move Roth (BB) over to third base.  Bryant then executed a beautiful bunt and beat the throw for an RBI hit to score Roth.

Radford will host Big South leader Winthrop (6-0) on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
