HIGHLANDERS FALL TO NO. 25 VIRGINIA TECH ON FRIGID SUNDAY AFTERNOON

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Radford women's lacrosse team fell to No. 25 Virginia Tech, 23-8, at the Beamer-Lawson Indoor Practice Facility on Sunday.

At first glance it looks like a really tough loss, but there are several positives to take away from the outing. First off, the eight goals scored by the Highlanders are by far the most they have scored against the Hokies after recording just two in each of their previous two meetings. It's also the most goals Radford has ever scored against a nationally ranked opponent.

Radford also got a third straight solid performance from senior midfielder Juliette Ruland, who notched a team-high three goals on six shots. She was extremely efficient, putting five of those six shots on frame including a goal with 8:10 in the first half in which she raced the full length of the field past the defense and scored. The Marshall, Va. native has scored multiple goals in all three games in 2019.

Junior attacker Lindsey Carroll also looked good, scoring two goals to bring her season tally to eight. Senior midfielder Emma Rogers found the back of the net twice for her first two goals of the year and senior midfielder Callie Bonnel accounted for one more.

Ruland got the scoring started, putting the Highlanders ahead 1-0 just one-minute and 23-seconds into the game. Despite the quick start, Virginia Tech bounced back for a 7-0 run that gave them control.

The score stood at 14-4 at halftime, meaning nearly the entire second half featured a running clock due to the 10-goal lead rule. The Highlanders gave it all they had, but weren't quite able to get back into it.

STAT CHECK
  • Bonnel and Rius were solid on draw controls, leading the Highlanders with five and four respectively
  • Sophomore defender Rachel Rogers caused a pair of turnovers and the Hokies turned the ball over 10 times as a team
  • Megan Hawken led the team with two ground ball pick-ups
