RADFORD DROPS HEARTBREAKER TO LIBERTY

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Radford softball team dropped a heartbreaker to Liberty on Tuesday night as the Flames erased a seven-run deficit and scored nine straight run in a 10-8 game at Liberty Softball Stadium.

Amber Bishop, Liberty's leading hitter, stepped into the batter's box with two outs, the bases loaded and her team down by two in the bottom of the seventh inning. She saw two pitches before hitting a walk-off grand slam to right center field, giving her team a 10-8 victory.

Liberty plated the first run on a Deidra See double in the second inning. The lead held for an inning until the reigning Big South Player of the Week, Hunter Mundy, singled home Sydney Fisher in the fourth inning tying the game at one.

On the ensuing at-bat, Maggie Rowe dropped a bunt with runners on the corners and one out. Chase Cassady, the Liberty pitcher, mishandled the ball and all runners were safe – including the go-ahead run in Hannah Medlam.

After a Destiny Freeman walk and a strikeout, Sofia Tapia drew her team-leading 26th walk of the season with the bases loaded and extended the lead to 3-1. The next batter, Lindsay Hunter, hit a pop up that went right in between the pitcher and catcher, which appeared that it would land in play and bounce into foul territory, but new Flame pitcher Julia DiMartino laid out and almost made the catch. However, every runner was safe and another run scored.

The first pitch of the next at-bat went right past Liberty's catcher and allowed Freeman to score on the passed ball. DiMartino was able to get a seven-pitch strikeout on the same at-bat, but not before the Highlanders took a 5-1 lead. The five runs scored were the most Liberty has allowed in an inning all season and only two other teams have scored that many in a single frame (Washington and Baylor).

Huffman allowed her fifth hit of the game in the bottom of the inning but pitched a scoreless frame.

The Highlanders added three more runs thanks to Maggie Rowe's third home run of the season and her second, third and fourth RBIs of the contest. It was the first home run allowed by Liberty since March 24th and only the 12th all season and it gave Radford an 8-1 lead.

Hannah Morris was called on for Huffman to start the fifth inning and pitched a scoreless frame. Then things went sideways for the Highlanders in the sixth.

Morris threw seven straight balls then Jessie Marvin came into pitch. She allowed three straight singles – including one that plated a run. Then Huffman returned with the bases loaded when See hit a bases clearing double and made it an 8-5 game. The Flames added one more before the end of the inning and cut the lead to two, 8-6.

After Radford went three up, three down the Flames had momentum heading into the final frame. The Highlanders had a chance to turn a double play for the first two outs but could only get one. Fisher made a great play for the second out as she got the lead runner at third until a pitch plunked Autumn Bishop and loaded the bases for her sister Amber, who was Liberty's final batter.

STAT OF THE GAME
The eight runs scored by Radford were the most runs allowed by Liberty all season.
